To wonder why people pay extra for a posh postcode?

I was looking at a new build site up north and there was a floor plan I wanted to see at another site that was 4 miles away. The same floor plan at this other site was £70,000 more than the area I was looking at (the same house £410k in the original spot and £480k in the other postcode). It baffles me though because they are both nice areas with outstanding schools. The lady at the sales office got a bit defensive over the price (although I didn't ask about it) and said, "Well you pay for the postcode here." She then didn't seem to want to explain anything really about different houses that were available after I told her that we originally looked at the "cheaper" area.

AIBU to question why people pay for the privilege of living in a certain postcode? My husband almost suspected that we were being discouraged at looking at the nicer area.

The area was a village and would depend on the same facilities/infrastructure/hospital/university etc as the other postcode.

I don't get it. Would you pay extra for a specific postcode?

I too don’t appreciate the “north-bashing” remarks. I have never been to any “nice” areas down south myself, I think living in and around the capital would be my idea of hell however I’m sure nice pockets exist. Just because you are so bigoted and closed-of-mind and experience to think there are only “nice” places in the south - please don’t inflict your nasty remarks on others. It must be very sad living in your box!

FireflyEden · 08/05/2019 21:59

I live up North and you can buy a mansion up here compared to what you can get down South with the same money. Please do not be discouraged by postcode snobiness here. The North has a lot to offer. I love it here.

ShirleyPhallus · 08/05/2019 22:02

My “northern bashing” comment was a wee joke Smile

I live in a street adjacent (I could literally throw a stone at the house) there is a house in the same council, same school catchment etc that is on for £985,000.

It's smaller than mine by 200 feet. My place is probably worth more than 300k less.

Because of the postcode 🤷‍♀️

There are a couple of housing developments near me - about a mile apart, there is a price difference of one particular style of 17k - which may not seem a lot but is about a 7% price difference. School catchments are different but both are in similar schools, land price may well have been different, but it boils down to say you live in X is better than living in Y. It won't be that long before they pretty much meet up anyway.

They are still over priced boxes though - the 4 bed we looked at had a smaller footprint than our then 3 bed.

Sheffield has some right posh northern postcodes, including its own Fulwood.

That was the Fulwood I originally guessed OP meant! Some right mansions near there.

Don't be deluded that insurance will be cheaper in a posh, more expensive area. I've moved in and out of a posh area my insurance went up in the posh area and down again when I left.

Apparently the average cost of damage to cars in an accident in a posh area is higher.

Inferiorbeing · 08/05/2019 22:44

One of the reasons liked our house when we bought was it had a certain towns postcode, whereas the other houses we looked at has a different town postcode which is considered worse. Was a minor, insignificant thing, but made me feel better about the area! I'm fully aware its ridiculous though Grin

I always laugh at articles and campaigns about people trying to change their postcodes. I seem to remember the good people of Stoke Poges have tried a few times to lose their Slough post code. They probably thinks it’s too naice for that 🙄

Summersunshine2 · 09/05/2019 22:55

For those mentioning The North - have house prices gone up in general since Ayra got rid of the NK?

hibbledibble · 09/05/2019 23:00

I'm in London. Go 200m north into a less fashionable postcode, and you shave 100k off the price. The area is the same, it's literally metres away. It's sheer madness.

Schnitzelvonkrumb · 09/05/2019 23:16

Our whole town is the same postcode but prices vary massively. Exactly the same style of 1970s estate house can be around 25-30% more expensive in better school catchments and nearer the station

DizzyPhillips · 09/05/2019 23:19

We moved to a “posh postcode” because the catchment schools are the best in the area. In Scotland so no rammy over school places.

Ivegotthree · 09/05/2019 23:30

I live in what could be described as a posh postcode but we bought into the area not the postcode.

By that I mean it's leafy, low crime, good schools, nice neighbours/community, nice parks, a Waitrose, good transport links, nice cafes and restaurants.

Those sorts of things make one area- and therefore postcode - more expensive than another.

superram · 09/05/2019 23:36

I live in West London. Used to live in a ‘posh’ postcode area, one house right on the outskirts so a bit scuzzy, other prime posh location. Now live in inbetween area but postcode not as naice. She meant area not postcode.

Iltavilli · 10/05/2019 00:00

Yeah, north-bashing comments are fricking “hilarious” aren’t they.
