Toothache worse than labour! Talk me off the edge

mawof3soontobe · 08/05/2019 19:23

Currently 32 weeks pregnant with DC3 and I hands down have the WORST toothache I have ever known in my entire life (and I've had a tooth knocked out accidentally).
Went to the dentist yesterday who gave me antibiotics as she suspects internal infection. I've now taken two full days of antibiotics and I'm taking the maximum dose of soluble paracetamol which isn't even touching it! Sad
My poor DP thought I was in labour yesterday watching me pace floors moaning and howling like a deranged animal!!! I NEED RELIEF ASAP! How the hell do I get through this pain?! I would gladly give birth weekly over this! I have a very high pain threshold and have given birth twice drug free but JFC this is horrific!
Someone give me a remedy safe in pregnancy? HELP!!

Bloody hell op , roll on 9am’ assume u tried anbesol??

RichYorks · 09/05/2019 00:33

Everything you've been prescribed will be absolutely fine. Everyone is supercareful with pregnancy so wont prescribe if doubting.

Watch your paracetamol regime, it needs a minimum of 4 hours between doses. It is most effective if taken 1g 4-6hours apart as you'll build upto the effective concentration of the drug in your body, it takes over a day to get there but by taking it regularly at the correct interval will give the best pain relief.

claybakefan · 09/05/2019 00:34

Am I reading that as you took paracetamol & cocodomol? The 'omol' part of cocodomol is paracetamol.

mawof3soontobe · 09/05/2019 00:39

@claybakefan yes you are reading correct, from 6pm I've taken 3.5g paracetamol, 16g codeine and 600mg ibuprofen. Not smart I know and still sitting in pain right this second unbelievably.

jessicawessica · 09/05/2019 00:41

I totally agree OP.
Give me labour pains rather than toothache any day.
I found the only thing worked for me was codeine during toothache,
Nothing else touched it.

claybakefan · 09/05/2019 00:43

Oh you poor, poor thing. I've been there. It's pain like nothing else.
I advise you to call 111 and tell them how much paracetamol you've taken.
I'm concerned x

Angie169 · 09/05/2019 00:50

I agree clove oil is good it works by numbing the area not actually killing the pain IYSWIM . if you have not got any oil in , rub a small amount of ground clove into your gum or ( though I have not tried it ) a dried clove between your cheek and gum may work . it tastes bloody horrid but I guess you dont mind putting up with that right now.

I have also used Dequacain throat lozangers held between the gum and cheek but check the ingredients I am not sure what kind of pain killer is used in them

DecomposingComposers · 09/05/2019 01:04

OP you've taken more than the 24 hr max dose of paracetamol in 10 hours. You can't take any more now until 3.30pm

That means no co codamol either. Maybe you should phone 111 and explain what you've taken

DecomposingComposers · 09/05/2019 01:07

In fact you took 5 paracetamol tablets (2500mg) in the 2.5 hours from 9 - 11.30pm. You should only be taking 1g (2 tablets) every 4 - 6 hours so you've exceeded the dose by quite a lot.

CharityConundrum · 09/05/2019 01:19

Oh OP - please be careful! A friend who works in A and E told me when I had toothache that the most common cause of accidental overdose is tooth pain because people cannot cope with it and end up taking too much pain relief in desperation. Please call OOH about what you've taken and see if they can offer you safer pain relief.

Tavannach · 09/05/2019 01:29

I don't know how safe it is to mix with everything else you've taken, but a dispersible aspirin on the gum at the site of the pain will help as an emergency measure.

claybakefan · 09/05/2019 01:47

Thank God! I thought it was just me making a fuss about the paracetamol. I do hope the OP rang 111.

SimplySteveRedux · 09/05/2019 01:54

Don't rub clove oil on your gum, it's an irritant, you rub it on the tooth, you can also buy it in a gel called Dentogel/Dentogen.

For gum use Orajel, this contains lidocaine local anaesthetic and numbs the nerves in the gum.

Hope it settles soon, IME toothache is up there with earache and biliary colic as excruciatingly painful. ThanksThanks

SimplySteveRedux · 09/05/2019 02:00

Sorry, Orajel has benzocaine not lidocaine.... still a numbing local anaesthetic however.

mawof3soontobe · 09/05/2019 03:55

Sorry everyone, I managed to fall asleep at 01:30 and it was such a relief! I know I exceeded the max dose of paracetamol but I assure you I feel OK, my partner is also here and should I feel ill in any way he has the list on his phone to explain what I've taken to A&E but I doubt I'll have to do so. Five more hours to go and I'll hopefully be rid of this

Insomniac dentist here, as someone said further up, call your dental practice and leave a msg so hopefully they may call you before they start answering the phones, and also phone bang on as they open. I hope you get some relief today x

mawof3soontobe · 09/05/2019 04:15

I now can't sleep for worrying about accidental overdose, great! Found an article that states as little as 15 tablets can overdose, which is 7.5g so hoping im OK!

OP posts:
Flashinggreen · 09/05/2019 04:23

I wouldn’t be surprised if you’d vomited up the 6.15pm dose of paracetamol. I’m not a doctor so if you are concerned I would phone 111.

springclouds2019 · 09/05/2019 04:26

Op please at least ring 111 and tell them exactly how much paracetamol you have taken. As I understand it there is treatment you can be given within a window of time if you have overdosed. After that time the damage to the liver cannot be reversed.

springclouds2019 · 09/05/2019 04:27

Also just because you feel fine it doesn't mean anything- the damage takes a while to happen.
