So worried about this

Sorry for hijacking AIBU but I know I’ll get the traffic here.

I’ve just received a letter from an HMRC Compliance Officer asking me to provide bank statements showing what childcare costs I’ve paid in the previous tax year. This is fine, I have all the info and will send it off to them. My average weekly ccc were £60 per week, which they were aware of and this reflects what’s on my bank statements. There’s nothing else mentioned on the letter, it only talks about childcare costs.

What I’m worried about is that there are transactions where I’ve transferred money to my partners account - small amounts like 10 and 20 pounds if we’ve maybe been out for dinner and he’s paid, I’ve then transferred him half so we can go Dutch, sometimes he’s done the same with me if I’ve paid, so his name appears on my bank statements.

I’ve only been with DP a year and a half and we moved in together at the beginning of this month. I reported this to HMRC straight away and stopped claiming Tax Credits - I work and earn too much for WTC but was getting CTC and childcare element to help with CCC. I have 2 kids who are not DP’s.

I’m just really worried that they’ll think DP was supporting me due to the transferring of money between our accounts, albeit it is infrequent and only small amounts. He does have proof of his previous address before he moved in here if they do question it but I work for DWP and am totally shitting myself that they could sack me because of this.

Am I being stupid and worrying needlessly?

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

bridgetreilly · 08/05/2019 12:57

It's perfectly normal to have transactions like that on any account. It'll be fine so long as it's not regular or significant sums going only in one direction.

ems137 · 08/05/2019 12:57

I know that awful worried sick feeling from similar experiences with benefits.

I don't think you've got anything to worry about. It's most likely just a random audit check generated by their systems. And even if it was to check up about your partner, he can prove his previous address anyway so it wouldn't be a problem.

Tevion10 · 08/05/2019 12:58

Same here don't worry. You've done everything you should have done.

TixieLix · 08/05/2019 13:00

Firstly, I don't think you have anything to worry about as you have a perfectly reasonable explanation for those transactions. However, do HMRC need to see other transactions? They've asked for proof of CC costs, so can you leave those transactions visible and use a marker pen or something to cover over all other transactions that are not CC related? Surely the other trx are none of their business?

Idontwanna · 08/05/2019 13:00

If the DWP are asking for bank statements to show child care payments can you blank out all other transactions? It shouldn't be a problem as they shouldn't ask for more information than they need.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/05/2019 13:01

You can blank out the other transactions - but don't worry; small amounts for dinner and things and money going both ways will be fine.

Firewitch · 08/05/2019 13:04

I never thought of blanking out other transactions actually.

Yea, they’ve specifically asked for bank statements showing the amount paid to the childcare provider and the dates - that’s it. I paid by standing order every Tuesday and all the transactions are showing on my bank statements so there’s no issue with providing this proof.

I called the bank today and asked them to send me the statements for the last tax year so I suppose when I get them I could just blank out all other transactions?

If you do online banking, you can usually select the last 12 months and filter the statement per transaction. I can type ' tesco' in to my banking and it will only display all payments made to tesco for the last year

Just send them that, they have no reason to see any other personal information.

OneFootintheRave · 08/05/2019 13:15

Redact all but ccc's.

Firewitch · 08/05/2019 13:21

Thank you pigeon

I do use internet banking but didn’t know you could do this!
