To give in to my cheese craving

I am a veggie of over 30 years and a vegan for 18 months. I am also perimenopausal and have been getting odd symptoms and recently have been craving cheese & feeling like there is something lacking in my diet.

I am as healthy as I can be as a vegan & definitely feel that this is linked to shifting hormones as a few days a month I feel really unwell & empty, like nothing will satisfy me.

I feel really bad though as I went vegan because of the ethical concerns of eating dairy & animal welfare concerns.

I just don’t know what to do. Aibu to go with what my body is asking for?

I would, you might find you don't actually like it very much once you try it again after being vegan for a long time.
You'll have to share what cheese you decide to go with though- will it be a mild cheddar or a nice Camembert?

no, everyone needs cheese. im sure everyone has at one point in their life come downstairs naked at 3:32 am and completely emptied the fridge of cheese. no chees remains, all the cheddar, brie, gouda, red leicester, edam, camembert is gone after a flurry of consumption. they drop the gherk (gherkin) jar to the floor and smashes due to their cheese-slickened hands and their loss of motor function caused by the lack of sleep and titanic cheese consumption. their wife comes down to see what the noise was only to see them naked and covered in cheese. not all cheese made it to the mouth and fell onto their bulging stomach, falling deeper into the folds to become blue cheese. their wife has seen this before and this is the last time. she tells them its over and that she is leaving tomorrow. they plead, crumbs of various cheese falling from their maw. they reach out their hand to hold their wife for the last time but she recoils in disgust at the brie soaked sausage fingers grasping at her and storms out the room. they begin to cry, their salty tears mixing with the cheese encrusted on their face. they know that she has gone and all that is left is cheese. they turn to the remaining dairy goodness and begin to consume again, but they know that they are now truly alone and the only one that ever loved them has gone for good.
at least the cheddar was extra mature though.

Just have some cheese. If you are vegan for environmental reasons or animal welfare you have still done amazingly and a little bit is not going to undo that compared to somebody who eats red meat and dairy every day. Also life is too short to deprive yourself

PushkarKali · 07/05/2019 18:33

That is... a truly disturbing and beautiful vignette, @jaredsubs

I want cheese.

OP, someone on a thread earlier was saying their friend is a vegan four days a week and eats what he likes the other three, including bacon! So I don’t think you should judge yourself too harshly for a morsel of Red Leicester.

I confess to also giving in to the cheese craving as a vegan. First time when I got pregnant and just couldn't find any other thing to satisfy the 'prunger' (pregnancy hunger). And more recently, with the premature menopause-munchies. Now regularly accept that my body needs that fatty hit of protein. I don't feel too bad about it after 1)sourcing a relatively ethical cheesemaker and 2) discovering that I have pretty severe osteoporosis for a 44 year old.
Go with your gut
