AIBU to ask if you can identify this chest? Is it modern or vintage?

I'll attach a pic

It's stamped 'EP' at the bottom along with another stamp that I can't quite decipher. It's a dirty copper colour and metal of some description. Set with green enamel.

Any ideas at all?

Looks quite Arts and Crafts to me, whether real or fake I have no idea. How old is "vintage" to you?

Justbreathing · 07/05/2019 16:06

Looks arts and crafts style

HennyPennyHorror · 07/05/2019 16:09

I think it's 1960s. That was a period where designers loved imitating earlier stuff. The big green settings make it look so to me anyway.

Tinuviel · 07/05/2019 16:10

EP usually means electro-plated.

Justbreathing · 07/05/2019 16:10

I agree with @HennyPennyHorror
It doesn’t look refined enough to be 1900s
But it doesn’t look modern

Samind · 07/05/2019 16:11

Have no idea but it's gorgeous!!!

FadedRed · 07/05/2019 16:13

Local auction houses can be very helpful in identifying stuff. You could send those photos in an email and they will tell you if it is genuine Arts anc Crafts from circa 1900’s or a reproduction. There was a lot of repro done in the 1960-70’s.

Justbreathing · 07/05/2019 16:20

There is also a website called value my stuff.
Though an auction house will do it for free

CooperD1 · 07/05/2019 16:20

Hmm. Vintage to me would be maybe 80 years or so.

Ah of course! EP is electro plated. Didn't think of that!

Totally disagree it’s an Arts and Craft tea caddy by James Cartland made in Birmingham around 1910. The larger entwined image on the bottom are his initials.
The underneath has some repair. This shows how valued the item was.

Beebumble2 · 07/05/2019 16:22

PS don’t be tempted to clean it with Brasso. You could devalue it. Most collectors prefer the original state.

Justbreathing · 07/05/2019 16:28

@Beebumble2
Fascinating! I didn’t even see that.

Beebumble2 · 07/05/2019 16:37

The green stone look like Malachite, a popular decoration on Arts and Craft items.

TeacupDrama · 07/05/2019 16:40

it is actually an antique do not clean it with brasso etc or even copper cleaner remove any actual dirt with a cloth and soap removing patina devalues most things except jewellery
as said before EP means electroplated sometimes it has EPNS which is electro plated nickel silver, other versions of silver plate are Britannia metal/silver/plate
generally an antique is over a 100 years old ie before 1919 and vintage is more than 25 years old ie 1994

RedBerryTea · 07/05/2019 16:41

BeeBumble you beat me to it. It's James Cartland, late 19th/early 20th c. A lovely piece!

TeacupDrama · 07/05/2019 16:54

personally I think the one linked has been spoilt by over polishing the one in the OP is much nicer

CooperD1 · 07/05/2019 16:57

You're so good- thank you!

When you were saying 'arts and crafts' I was thinking ' no no it definitely wasn't homemade or anything' Grin

My parents have recently died and I'm just removing the last couple of pieces from their home when I spotted this and wondered what it was.

OP posts:
CooperD1 · 07/05/2019 17:00

It's divided into two and comes with a spoon!

So I can give it a good wash then with just mild soap?

I wouldn’t do anything to it personally

CooperD1 · 07/05/2019 17:03

@Beebumble2 I think it is malachite, you're spot on

CooperD1 · 07/05/2019 17:04

@TeacupDrama thanks for that info
