To ask how much you spend on nieces and nephews presents?

As our number of nieces and nephews grows, it is becoming quite costly. We don't have children ourselves yet. One of DH's siblings is quite wealthy so really splashes the cash when it comes to the other sibling's children. I have told DH we are not to compete and we need to do what is best for our situation.

He also states that we should have the same budget for nieces and nephews on both sides of the family. Whilst I understand this, I do feel a bit miffed as relationships are quite strained with his side of the family. They didn't get us anything for our wedding not even a card, (no one was ecstatic about our marriage but that's a separate thread) and it is the same for our birthdays and Christmas etc. On my side of the family however, the relationships are positive and gifts for all occasions are always exchanged and they are all of the same value so no one is short changed.

I know this has nothing to do with the nieces and nephews, but I do find it frustrating to see the parents of the nieces and nephews on his side happily receive all the gifts from ourselves when they barely even acknowledge me, and certainly don't acknowledge our birthdays/anniversary etc. I'm sure that part is irrelevant and just me feeling bitter though.

Per chilld £10 Christmas and another £10 birthday and usually an easter egg for about £2

ilovemycatmorethanyou · 12/05/2019 16:08

I have four and spend about £25 each for a birthday, up to about £30 for Christmas. No kids myself.

Gillian1980 · 12/05/2019 16:09

About £15 each but we don’t have many. Maybe when dh’s younger siblings have kids too we’ll need to go to £10.... we’ll see.

We don’t but for our own adult siblings though, we just do kids presents now.

MatildaTheCat · 12/05/2019 16:11

Between us we have 17! Spent roughly £20 on most of them until the age of 18. One brother and his wife just don’t ‘do’ birthday and Christmas presents so we never sent their dc presents, just cards. No bad feeling just how it was.

confusedandemployed · 12/05/2019 16:12

ExDH has 3 nephews, he only spends about £10 on each I think. DSis and I only have 1 DC each and we both probably spend about £20 at birthdays and £30 at Christmas. But DNephew and DD are almost like siblings - they absolutely adore each other and currently we live with them half the week (long story).

MsSquiz · 12/05/2019 16:12

We spend around £50 each on them, we only have 3. Plus all of their birthdays are in December, so they often get gifts that they will grow into, and use throughout the year.

MumUnderTheMoon · 12/05/2019 16:18

Up to £20

Ragwort · 12/05/2019 16:18

£20 exactly, I give my niece & nephew a £20 note each & my sibling gives my DS a £20 note Grin. We’ve now all agreed (amicably) to stop as the DC are all over 18.

stayathomer · 12/05/2019 16:19

We generally buy presents on sale so they look more expensive but always tell the parents that so they don't feel under pressure, would be about 15/20 euro. As for the wedding present, we didn't get my db a wedding present and it still haunts me but we had no money ( as in living hand to mouth) and I always wanted to just land about 300euro on him but it just hasn't happened yet. Sorry but I just think people who don't give presents, there's a reason, it's not always cut and dry. Also have missed birthdays as intended on posting then was late/ put off. Had mil tell me our nephew was really sad we hadn't given him a birthday present, we had but it was 2 months late and he assumed we were just giving h i m a present!!

Gustavo1 · 12/05/2019 16:19

We used to spend around £30 per nibling on Christmas and birthday. We now have 11 though and so it’s more like £10-15. As birthdays are spread over the year, they are sometimes more depending on the gift. Christmas is always more like £10. We also have 3 children of our own now so funds are stretched way further than they used to be at Christmas time.

TheGoogleMum · 12/05/2019 16:26

£20-30 each on birthdays and xmas but we only have 2. DH and i have 1 sibling each so we'll never have lots of niblets

TheGoogleMum · 12/05/2019 16:26

*niblings

Sparklyring · 12/05/2019 16:27

£100 each, we only have 2 little nephews though.

BikeRunSki · 12/05/2019 16:29

I spend about £20 each on my sister’s children at Christmas and in their birthdays.

DH buys his brother’s kids a big Christmas present. He never remembers their birthdays and I refuse to be responsible for his family’s birthdays. TBF, his brother rarely remembers our at either Christmas or birthdays.

I stop nephew/niece presents when they get to 18. They get a £50 ish present for their 18th and no more presents.

Montsti · 12/05/2019 16:38

£25 for Birthday and £25 for Christmas for the 5 on my side...£15ish for the 5 on dh’s side but that’s only because they’ve always spent less...I’ve started spending more on their kids...they spend about £10 on mine per birthday and the same for Christmas...

junebirthdaygirl · 12/05/2019 16:52

I have lots and its ongoing. I spend 20 on each one and 20 at Christmas. For 18th/ 21st its 50 and then it stops.
Dh s family don't do this at all but sometimes when we visit l would give some cash especially to teens as teens love cash.

SherlockSays · 12/05/2019 16:53

£10 each for birthday, £15 at Xmas - they range in ages from 7 to 18. We have 6 of them to buy for and only one DD so we keep to the budget.

user1487194234 · 12/05/2019 17:02

About £50 per child at Christmas and Birthdays
And something at Easter,£20 when they are off on holiday
The older ones late school/Uni £30 or so most times I see them, remember how hard it was when I was a student
Also save £25/month in a savings account for each which they get when 21
Hopefully towards travel but will be up to them

Kitkat1982 · 11/11/2023 00:39

That is pretty sad

Fionaville · 11/11/2023 00:45

Ours get £30 on both sides of the family. Luckily all the siblings have the same amount of kids, including us. So each 'family unit' gets the same amount back. It used to be £50 before we had kids and there was only a couple of them though.

ConsuelaHammock · 11/11/2023 00:52

£25 for nieces and nephews for birthdays. Several years ago I requested that we stopped Christmas gifts as my children were getting too much and I really dislike waste. I prefer to buy them one larger gift myself at Christmas which I know they want / will use.
My husband sorts out his side because I’m not his mother.

ConsuelaHammock · 11/11/2023 00:54

For recent 18th birthdays I’ve given £50 cash. First 21st birthday is coming just before Christmas and I’m not sure how much to spend. £50 or possibly more. We will
stop gifts when they turn 21 .

AlmostAJillSandwich · 11/11/2023 01:01

My partners half sister has 3 kids, i've never met them. But i paid for their presents last year, was between £20 and £25 per kid. Probably do similar this year.
