To do a water fast for a fortnight

I know, it’s drastic and everyone talks about all the weight going back on but I’m desperate and I think I have a plan which I want to put to the vipers.....

I have tried unsuccessfully to lose weight several times over the years. I have a medical history which means exercise is difficult but not impossible. A mental health history which most recently seen me in the pits of depression and void of any motivation even to shower or wash a cup.

I’ve tried keto, slimming world and just portion control in the last year but I always fall off the wagon. It’s mainly due to mental health. Food is my crutch but it’ll kill me if I don’t figure it out. I’m on a waiting list for therapy and should see one within six weeks according to my doctor who also thinks my overeating is an emotional problem. At this stage I don’t know what’s true but I need help so I’m going to go.

I could go on for hours but there’s no point. I just wanted to give a bit of a picture behind my current plan.

I’m thinking all the fad diets where people put weight back on are because they fall off the wagon without a maintenance plan. What if I did a water fast and went straight to slimming world then? I’ve lost weight with slimming world so I know it works.

Getting weight off quickly is very important to me right now both because I have to go back to work soon and for my mental and physical health.

AIBU to water fast and go straight to SW?

Flame away but if you must could you please explain why you did? If I shouldn’t do it I’d like to know the rationale. It helps me to make logical decisions when I’m usually impulsive and make hasty decisions.

Thanks.

I say this gently OP, but if you haven’t been been able to stick to other types of dieting, why would you be able to stick to one that’s so severe? Please reconsider, it isn’t healthy and you’re likely to gain the weight back as it isn’t a sustainable lifestyle change

5:2 diet might work better
Effectively you fast 2 days a week although you can increase to every other day for faster results.

Buy the fast 800 book and do that. It's a great diet to start with if you have a lot of weight to lose and it helps you understand the science behind food addiction and how to use fasting and diet for better health. It'll be 800 calories a day for a few weeks/months until you get to or near your ideal weight and then you'll gradually eat more but it'll be within an eight hour timeframe each day with sixteen hours for your body to rest and regenerate.

A two week fast will damage you. Fasts up to three days are beneficial for health because they give the body a break and put it into repair mode but it goes into reverse if you leave it longer than that. A 24-48 hour fast once a month is good for long term health.

There's a lot of information about intermittent fasting online and on YouTube. It's very healthy and will have huge benefits if done correctly, take advice from the scientists and doctors who promote it based on proven scientific studies.

I was so short on time I did the BSD diet. I used to know the calories but have forgotten

I did 10 weeks

1 bowl weighed and measured Special K for late breakfast (something like 30g cereal, 200ml milk)

Late lunch - 1 bowl soup with protein, this was normally half a chicken and veg soup from M&S

Early Dinner - another soup, a salad with cooked chicken breast or v small portion of dinner - mostly veg.

3 coffees through day with 20ml full fat milk

Small handful no salt mixed nuts for snacks, again, weighed. Normally ate these when I was cooking.

Bedtime Options hot chocolate on occasion.

Important to try and avoid carbs, sweeteners and fruit. Eat lots of veg more than anything else - soup really helped me with this. Try and eat late in the morning or even wait until lunch, and try and make sure you've eaten all your food by 7pm.

If I wanted a treat or small comfort if I was desperate I'd have another bowl of Special K.

Evenings were hardest as I eat when bored and sedentary. Try and paint your nails, go out for the evening, go to bed early, read a book in bed, take up knitting or something.

ANY MOVEMENT is good. All movement. Any movement. What you can. If it hurts, stop. Get a pedometer and just tell yourself no matter what you'll do more steps than yesterday Flowers

I lost just over 3 stone in 3 months- and that was over Christmas.
