To renounce underwired bras?

Today a bra, that has been comfortable, decided to spend the whole day digging into the sides of my boobs until I pulled the bloody thing out. This happened yesterday with a different bra and has left me really sore.

I have been measured and wear bras that fit well enough but I can’t wait to get them off at the end of the day. After yanking it off today I fished out my crop top bras I wore when pregnant and it’s like my tits went “aaahhhhhh!”

I wore soft bras when pregnant and they were awesome. I’d wear underwired where it needed it but does anyone else just not bother with them otherwise? Underwired that is not bras!

They’re just awful things! I don’t have massive boobs so I’m ok.

@MrDarcysMa I loathe bras and have just ordered that sloggi one on your recommendation.

Bras are shit, torture of women! Bastards.

38gg here. Always worn underwires. Can anyone advise where I should be looking for bras without them.

bluebluezoo · 06/05/2019 22:36

Never got on with underwires.

Sports bras all the way. Usually the shock absorber, comfy and keeps them in place :)

SavingSpaces2019 · 07/05/2019 00:31

i had a fitting at Bravissimo - 32E.
I told the girl doing the measuring that it didn't feel right as there was back fat bulging out where it shouldn't be but she was insistent that it was the correct size.
Went to Primark and tried a 38E - fits perfect.

I hate the wiring but it gives my heavy boobs better support than the soft bras -and they don't jiggle about as much

Fruityb · 07/05/2019 07:23

Ahh I have reached sloggi stage! They look amazing!

Might be the sizing? I laboured for years under the impression I was a 42DD, now wearing a 38GG and OMG my bras are so much more comfortable and look better. I used to feel the wire was cutting in but that was only because the cup was too small and my bosoms were stretching the bra too much. Still can’t go without underwire though, I get a nasty underboob rash if I do.

Boggles

What a lovely theory. Except boobs come.in all different shapes and sizes and ruin that, don't they? My boobs literally meet in the middle - there is no way for a wire not to be touching the boob tissues.

I am a j cup and I feel sufficiently perked up by a Freya fancies bralette - gives a good "natural" position, I think.

I do wish makers of DD+ swimwear would realise that it's not actually necessary to make wired swimsuits that stick your boobs up as if you're wearing a formal bloody gown on top. If you can't be comfortable lying on a sunlounger, when can you?

BrightYellowDaffodil · 07/05/2019 07:46

I chucked mine out last year and bought bralets. So, so much more comfortable!

SunshineCake · 07/05/2019 11:49

I've been measured at John Lewis, Leia, Rigby and Pellar, M & S and used boob or bust and still don't have any idea of my best size.

Zofloramummy · 07/05/2019 11:54

I’m post surgery and have an incision right on my bra line. I’ve bought front opening soft bras from Asda and they are fab! Should have been £20 but knocked down to a fiver. I’ve bought 4!

KeepingTheWormsQuiet · 07/05/2019 11:57

I used to wear underwired, but I just found them more and more uncomfortable. I switched to crop tops about 9 months ago and it's much more comfortable. I'm a B/C cup so it's fine for me.

Cannyhandleit · 07/05/2019 11:59

I haven't worn an underwire bra since I was pregnant nearly 5 years ago! Every time I put one on I have to take it off 5 mins later as I just can't bare it! I wear crop tops from matalan, soooo much comfier!

Alsohuman · 07/05/2019 12:04

It’s not the underwire I find uncomfortable but the boned bit some of them have an inch or so behind the edge of the cup.

bonzo77 · 07/05/2019 12:17

I’m off wires too. Tried almost everything in my size (28FF / G and 30 F/FF) in Bravissimo, brastop and John Lewis. Everything hurts my sternum, just behind the side of my boobs or the lace / labels / edges are too rough / spiky / sharp. I found a brand called Cake that make soft bras with a firm internal sling that give a reasonable shape and I can tolerate. But I’m
Dreading hotter days as they are very thick and will also show under vest tops. Sigh.

Hahaha88 · 07/05/2019 12:23

I want a bra that's not underwired but has padding because I have big but saggy boobs and find the kind without padding just don't give me any shape!

@Alsohuman I frigging hate bras that do that. What drive's me wild is when the smaller sizes don't have it then the bigger ones do! I have fat, sticking a bone in just means it bends with my fat and the top and bottom dig in!!

purplemunkey · 07/05/2019 12:29

Another sloggi zero feel fan here. I bought one a few weeks ago after getting fed up with my uncomfortable Underwired bra. Now I want one in every colour.

thenorthernluce · 07/05/2019 12:44

I recently made the conversion to wire free bras. My hesitation is that my sad sacks of despair, otherwise known as my breasts, need padding to give them shape, so I equates wire free bras with old fashioned garments that would make me look hideous.

Not so!!

As someone with small breasts and a wide torso (used to wear 38b/c), I now buy Primark bralettes and have never felt so comfy yet supported. I buy a larger size (XL) to minimise the back fat situation, but my breasts are nicely rounded by light padding and the stretchiness means I just pull them over my head. My faves are the racer back style in soft jersey-like material, but the 3-pack crop-top style is a close second. I used to sniff at cheap bras from Primark, and regularly paid around £20 for my bras, so I can’t believe I’m now wearing them and feel so pleased with them!

I ruined my armpits through years of wearing ill-fitting underwired bras (seriously, they are pockmarked and puckered and prevent me wearing sleeveless garments in public), so I’m just sorry I didn’t see the light earlier!
