I'm applying for jobs. I work in law enforcement at the moment and am applying for police jobs in my local area.

I've done my current job for 7 years and can't really remember how long is normal to wait to hear back. 2 weeks? 6 weeks? 2 months?

I'm not applying to be a bobby, it's more jobs in the community working with offenders etc.

I know. How long is a piece of string...

In my experience, which sadly is in scandinavia so potentially not so useful for you, if it's been longer than a week or two after the interview then it's bad news.

In the public sector it can be months! But they do generally tell you if you've been successful/ got through to the next round, so not hearing isn't necessarily a bad thing.

I would say if you haven’t heard anything within 4 weeks to move on and continue to apply for suitable vacancies however having been through the whole recruitment thing fairly recently ,I would also say it’s possible to be invited for interview 2 months after applying for a job.
Also expect not to receive ANY acknowledgment of an application from some employers. Not even a thanks but no thanks which is demoralising when you have put heart and soul into an application.
Good luck!

  • tell you if you've been successful or not - you'll get a reply one way or the other.

The longest I've ever waited from interview to being advised I was successful and subsequently starting the job was 8 months. My husband waited a year once and a friend once took almost two years. On the other hand, I once had an interview one week and started the job the next week.

So anything from 2 weeks to a year then Grin
