To ask if anyone else is absolutely shit at parking??

I can drive no problem. Drove regularly on motorways, nothing phases me about driving.

But parking, I'm crap. Absolutely crap.

I've just been somewhere and knocked a tall plant pot over. I apologised to the person who owns the thing I knocked over. Other people saw me do it and I'm mortified.

Because all I needed to do was drive instead instead of trying to reverse in. Honestly I don't have a clue what I was doing.

I left this place completely red faced and they are people I see on a regular basis. The pot wasn't damaged. But there was so much room for me to park properly.....what the actual hell was i doing?!

Should I message the person again to apologise for knocking it over? I picked it up and it's not damaged.

But it was loud as all these kids came running out to see what happened. Eurgh.......

The bigger car (Mondeo) is a pig in car parks because you end up with no more than 6 inches either side if parked perfectly in some of them

Six inches! That's luxury! Try driving an American car.

I drove into a multi storey car park yesterday and had literally one inch clearance on both sides. I had to go right up on to the roof to find a space that let me get out of the car.

I've always been fine at parking but we recently bought a larger car (longer and wider) and I cant park it for toffee! My 2 year old has started piping up with "ooh bad parking mummy" which does NOT help!

I’ve been driving over twenty years, have a small car,
I often park, get out and am amazed at crap my parking is!

costacoffeecup · 08/05/2019 07:27

I reversed into a lamp post a few months ago while heavily pregnant and it prompted DP to actually buy a new car with a camera and sensors.

Terrifies me and I won't drive it at all now unless I HAVE to and park a mile up the road just to not have to reverse park outside the house.

I have been driving for twenty years. I think the cameras etc are confusing and distracting.

Parking should be a part of the test, if you can't park then you can't handle the car safely and shouldn't be on the road.

It already is part of the test. What a ridiculous thing to say.

Are you short in stature. My car has a rounded nose and I find it harder to park than my previous one . But I always have the seat at max height so I can see what's around me. I see some people peering through the steering wheel. I would not feel in control like that.

I am awesome at reverse parking in a supermarket car park. However I can’t parallel park for shit.

firstimemamma · 08/05/2019 08:08

I've been driving for nearly 3 years and am still a nervous driver! And I lack confidence with parking! Frustrating as I know people who just pass their test then take to driving like ducks to water. I don't know why I get so worked up. I passed my test with only 4 minors, get told I'm a good driver and I'm not normally a nervous person.

The other week our ds had a hospital appt. I drove us there fine but when we got to the car park I got in a fluster, chucked the keys at my fiancé and made him park! You are not alone!

PettyContractor · 08/05/2019 09:20

I used to be good at parallel parking when I first got my licence, but since moving to London, neither home nor work required me to do it, and I wouldn't generally drive to a destination that required me to do it (didn't have a car park) because the chances of there being a space to park in would be close to zero. Consequently I forgot how to do it, it would take me two or three attempts to get into a tight space. Then I got my current car, which does it for me! Press the park button, indicator on, drive slowly until car display shows it's detected a space, stop and put into reverse, hands off steering wheel and accelerate slowly, car steers itself into space. (Tells me when to stop and change gear for pulling forward.) The main skill I need now is to remember to watch the display so I stop when the car wants me to.
