Extreme deep pain for up to 2 hours after breastfeeding

Hi all I hope someone here can help me. I've been EBF my DD quite successfully up until she started solids. I continued nursing her as she refused any bottles/cups etc so all her fluids we're coming from me. At around 8 months I started getting this horrific pain after BF. My nipples are fine and the pain is minimal while feeding but starts after the feed and lasts for hours. It's more like a pain deep inside.
It came to a point we're it was literally taking over my day. So I slowly weaned her off having that many feeds, stopped feeding at night and I'm now down to 1 feed in the morning and one before bed. I would like to continue that if I can but can't put up with this pain. It's now 10 o'clock and I nursed her at 8 and the pain is still intense (only have this problem on my right side) it's beginning to drive me potty.
Nursing counselors keep telling me hot/cold water, cabbage etc but I am not engorged, have no sore nipples and those suggestions do not help (I tried)
Any idea what this might be and what I can do? Or do I give up BF altogether.
Thanks!

Have you tried pumping? Could it be a blocked duct?

My baby went through a period of hurting me too, i went to the breastfeeding clinic who said i probably had a blocked duct due to his feeding changing and the positioning. We changed position and i pumped as well as bf for a few days which sorted it. I'd get it checked out.

It sounds like thrush? I had deep breast pain when I had it. Does DC have a white coated mouth that's not milk? Or any white patches at roof of mouth?

DumpTrump · 06/05/2019 10:16

It sounds like thrush to me. Can you get to your GP?

MRex · 06/05/2019 10:17

Have you been checked for mastitis?

Do you have any bite injuries from your daughter that are getting re-injured each time she feeds? I've had pain from some bite injuries and totally forgot to use lansinoh for ages to heal them but that sorted it out in a couple of days.

Thank you for your replies. I use lansinoh all the time but it makes no difference as my nipples are fine. I've had booked ducts and mastitis but this is very different. I have never mastered pumping but can't see how this would help. Thrush might be my last option but my baby has a nice pink tongue, could it still be thrush and could it have been there for this length of time?

I just looked up thrush online on the NHS page and it says it's unlikely to be thrush if the pain is only on one side. So I've exhausted all options Sad

Go and get it checked out. Best to do so as the gp may have other ideas. You could ask them about taking the oral thrush treatment just in case.

If it’s thrush you need to treat both you and baby. It can be tricky to get rid of. Is there a breastfeeding support group near you?

carla1000 · 06/05/2019 10:39

I guess I'll have to. Mostly male doctors at my surgery and I've had the weirdest comments in the past so don't put much trust in them 'do you mind if I prescribe antibiotics without examining you?' and 'its painful because you're breasts are very large' (turned out to be mastitis a few days later) and 'its the strap of your handbag that's causing the pain (was running a fever-ended up on antibiotics for mastitis)'
From the one female doctor I've not had much better 'just keep going, it'll be fine' (was mastitis too)
I had mastitis repeatedly with my first DS but never with DD.
So yeah, not too excited to go there again...
But thanks! At least I've tried...

What about a different clinic? An OOH one?

User199999999o9o999 · 06/05/2019 10:58

Or the nurse at your GP. Any kind of breast pain should get checked and i would insist they examine your breasts.

I've had a friend diagnosed with breast cancer while on mat leave, so I'm a big advocate of unexplained pain being checked. Besides which, why should you suffer with it?

SquigglePigs · 06/05/2019 13:37

I've just started to get the same thing. Again only on one side. My DD is 5 months old and it's been fine up to now. Sorry that's no help. I'm going to try to see a Dr this week I think.

carla1000 · 10/05/2019 13:53

So I've finally managed to get an appointment and went to see the doctor this morning. She did examine me and said there was no thrush visible and nothing much else. She's referred me to the breast clinic for a scan to see if there's a blocked duct. She didn't sound too sure and said it's probably nothing. I highly doubt the ultrasound will show anything as I've had blocked ducts before and this pain is completely different.
The only other thing I can think of is my DD using me as a dummy when there is no milk there. Has anyone experienced this and would that cause this type of pain? Otherwise, I am stumped and I'll start weaning her off completely next weekSad
