' Cards are so last century'

stopitandtidyupp · 05/05/2019 21:08

Earlier today I was getting ready to go round to the shop to get my Mum a birthday card for tomorrow and my Dad says don't bother with cards they are so last century. If you must, just make one.

I am tending to agree I only really buy for very close family and children. I also would for weddings, christenings as these are nice to keep.

However its my birthday soon and I would not be bothered by a card. I know some people would be but I think its less consumerism when people can equally just say it to you. Christmas even more so.

AIBU?

I love them. I want them. I like to give them!

bamboofibre · 06/05/2019 15:27

My daughters love them!

Waste of paper and money

RedSkyLastNight · 06/05/2019 15:54

Do NOT marry this man

I suspect OP is unlikely to marry her dad.

Drogosnextwife · 06/05/2019 15:58

They are pointless. They are a complete waste of money. The message in them means nothing because someone else thought of it, they clutter the place. People want to give them for every occasion. Easter cards! Wtf!

TheFaerieQueene · 06/05/2019 15:59

I agree that they are environmentally bad and a faff to buy and send. I would love to stop sending them. That said, my DF has just died and I have kept a number of cards he has sent to me over the years, which I’m so glad about.

sirfredfredgeorge · 06/05/2019 16:08

but don't throw shade all over other people who like TO give and receive them!

As long as such people never GIVE them to people who don't like receiving them, then that's fine, sadly though the people who like to give, tend to not realise and appreciate that other people don't like it.

AllStar14 · 06/05/2019 16:09

Oops wrong thread, sorry! I've reported it :-)

freshasthebrightbluesky · 06/05/2019 16:10

They're not environmentally damaging if the paper is from trees grown specifically for that paper.
I love to send and receive cards. I keep those with special, personal, meaningful messages, especially if they're handwritten, and periodically look at them (e.g. wedding cards, cards from my dc, birth celebration cards etc) and they bring me joy. A text message, e-card or fb post just isn't the same.

luckylavender · 06/05/2019 16:14

Each to his own. I love giving & receiving cards. No need to criticise other's views.

anothernotherone · 06/05/2019 16:37

freshasthebrightbluesky they are still environmentally damaging even if the trees are grown to make paper (and replaced, I presume that you mean - so sustainable forestry). Pulp mills contribute to air, soil and water pollution apart from the transport costs, printing etc.

IvanaPee · 06/05/2019 16:58

People who don’t like them aren’t “misery guts” 🙄

Katiepoes · 06/05/2019 17:16

Everything is environmentally damaging anothernoherone. Especially the internet we're currently all making such use of, any idea how energy heavy a single data center is?

freshasthebrightbluesky · 06/05/2019 18:52

anothernotherone Yes, paper and card has to be milled and energy spent on recycling it but it's wrong to think that paperless is better for the environment.

Data that's sent across and posted on the internet is stored on massive servers that use a huge amount of energy to power and maintain. People access this information on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops, all of which are made from materials that are mined and shipped from and to several different countries and have an enormous impact on the environment.

anothernotherone · 06/05/2019 19:33

Katiepoes yes almost everything is environmentally damaging. I was directly responding to freshas 's post stating that cards aren't environmentally damaging if the trees are grown especially for paper. It just isn't true. Even recycling the card in many case immediately is environmentally damaging.

Freshas and Katie the alternative to a card doesn't have to be an irritating eCard nor even a WhatsApp, if you're seeing the person and/ or a present is being given anyway say happy birthday when you see them/ hand the present over, I really think cards given in person are utterly pointless unless very specifically personal for some reason.

I rather doubt that one WhatsApp is as environmentally damaging as one commercially produced card though.

Divgirl2 · 06/05/2019 19:41

I buy locally made cards and send them to people I care about fairly regularly. I'm not great at remembering birthdays, and I don't bother with Christmas. I do love writing letters and cards though, and everyone likes getting post.

Blackbi2d · 06/05/2019 19:45

Waste of paperGrin Seriously. I get more junk mail and till receipts than cards. They get recycled. I love good quality cards, some I frame or cut up. I like sending nice ones too.

Steamfan · 06/05/2019 19:48

I love cards - both sending and receiving. They bring a spot of pleasure. As to all the "it''s a waste" - well - a great many things are a waste and environmentally damaging - probably more so than a card

Blackbi2d · 06/05/2019 19:52

You’ll be saying real books should be banned next.

Hiddenaspie1973 · 06/05/2019 19:53

I send them to mum brother sister dad and their young kids. For birthdays.
I don't bother with Christmas cards now and let my co-workers in my new job know this early on. I no longer send to my family, but I've stopped doing pointless Christ mas gifting too. Last christmas was sooo relaxing. Even though we hosted on the day.
I don't expect any from others.

Cliff143 · 06/05/2019 21:19

I love receiving cards and postcards but only when they have a long message in them. I spontaneously posted a handwritten card to my man about how wonderful he is and he thought it was old skool romantic. Each to their own, do what you love.
