I think £5, my dp thinks I'm being tight and we should put in £10.
Me and dp have been extra busy with work these past couple of weeks so haven't been able to get out to get a present as one of us usually would (would usually spend around £7-8) Dd has been been invited to a class party, not a best friend. so Mumsnets jury, am I being tight like my mother to only put a fiver in card. We're in London if that makes any difference? Apologies it's a bit of a rubbish aibu Grin

I think it depends on the Birthday child’s age.
I always put a £5 in up until about age 8/9 then it became £10. I’m just reaching that age with my youngest now and only friends he knows really well get £10 already.

MardyMavis · 05/05/2019 11:28

£5 if it's not a bff

Butchyrestingface · 05/05/2019 11:29

I would probably put a tenner in given London weighting. 😉

NoSauce · 05/05/2019 11:33

£10 if you can afford it.

Ilovetakeaways · 05/05/2019 11:35

Depends on the age. I usually put £10 if the child is over 7 or over

Candleglow7475 · 05/05/2019 11:35

I agree with £10 if you can afford it. You can’t really buy anything with £5

KC225 · 05/05/2019 11:36

Fiver and a box of maltesers (or family haribo bag)

SwedishEdith · 05/05/2019 11:39

We've had all sorts in the past so don't worry what someone might think. Maybe add a big bar of chocolate? The £5 will go into the pot, doesn't need to be spent as a single unit.

Croprotationinthe14thcentury · 05/05/2019 12:45

Ok thanks everyone. Drum roll please....... We've decided to put £10 in! Wink

I put £5 in each of my DBs kids birthday cards, even though the eldest is 12 soon! I know that probably comes across as stingey buuuuut, he and SIL have 9 DC. I can't afford £10 each. And then Christmas too!

Glad you're sorted OP.

Orangecake123 · 05/05/2019 13:45

£5.

I've stopped being over the top and save my money where I can.

IsYourGoogleBroken · 05/05/2019 13:54

If I was putting £10 in 25 years ago, a fiver seems a bit, well, tight

SparkleGem · 05/05/2019 13:56

IMO £10 is perfect, £5 is a bit miserable.

minisoksmakehardwork · 05/05/2019 17:16

My smalls are 7 and received £5 in birthday card from school friends. Perfectly acceptable. There are some small things and books they can buy for £5 (even in London) or they can put it towards something bigger. Dts saved theirs and put it towards Lego and L.O.L dolls.

We've just bought a friend of theirs a poly pocket set and a twisty pet which were £5 each and were well received.

£5 seems to be the average spend in our east of England area. Even if it's a £5 gift that was half price. The Works does a roaring trade in 2 for £10 sets!

Honeybee85 · 05/05/2019 17:25

Maybe a fiver and add some chocolates? Total £7,50

Saltisford · 05/05/2019 18:41

So do kids not get/give presents anymore at parties? I’m only asking as I’m pregnant with my first child!

thisisthetime · 05/05/2019 18:44

On dd’s 5th birthday 7 kids gave her money, all £10. We’re outskirts of London.

PassMeTheWine · 05/05/2019 18:45

I'd say £10 especially living in London

Croprotationinthe14thcentury · 05/05/2019 19:48

Saltisford yes I usually buy a present but haven't been able to this week as I've been extra busy with work so on this occasion it's a tenner in a card !

Saltisford
As a rule of thumb I do presents for under 7s but cash in a card for older kids because they tend to like more expensive things so can put the money towards something.

Mummyshark2019 · 05/05/2019 19:56

Yay for the £10
