To ask for my money back? How?

I don't know if I'm being a CFer or the plumber is.

The sealant on our bath wore out and caused the floorboards under the bath to soak. There was no sign that water was getting through until the plaster ceiling in the basement started to give way under the weight of the water.

We got a plumber out who said he could seal the bath with sealant but would recommend we used strips of white plastic instead. It looked awful; so we went with sealant, he sealed it up and we paid him £150. This was three weeks ago.

When it dried, it did. It look good.... it's not at all straight, and it peeled off behind the taps. He came back out yesterday, resealed a small amount and basically said sealant didn't work well on tiles, and that he was using window sealant instead of bath sealant as it's more waterproof Confused He didn't fix the unevenness or anything.

Today the ceiling has given way more, and having taken the side of the bath off, it's clear that where he has sealed is leaking quite a lot. The floorboards are now even more rotten and there's funghi Envy so we're going to get insurance to sort it out... but they won't refund us the £150, as he hasn't fixed anything and we'll have to pay for someone else to come out.

He doesn't really do phone calls, just texts.

Would you ask for your money back? How? He's spent about two hours here in total but if anything the problem is worse now, as it's been leaking for longer and there's now a lot of badly applied sealant to get off the bath and tiles.

Thanks!

Have you taken the side panel off the bath and had a look? I had a leaking bath and it was obvious where the leak was once I removed the side panel and ran the water.

Why are people saying he did what the OP asked? I can't see where she asked him to do a shit job with sealant.

Waveysnail · 05/05/2019 16:52

Crikey he saw you coming. Tube of sealant and damp finger - job done

I'm personally confused why lack of sealant would cause the ceiling to cave in?

I didn't know my bath was leaking until I saw a stain on the ceiling. I took the side of the bath off and ran the water and saw that the pipe was leaking. I'm in the South East and the leak was in an awkward place and it cost me £80 to get it fixed (about 45 minutes?)

Did he fill the bath when he applied the sealant to allow for the weight of use? How did so much water get onto the edge to leak through, do you use an over the bath shower? Or could you have a leak in the waste underneath.

I'd be very surprised if he'll give you your money back. Dry it all off properly and leave the side off...I reckon you've got a leak!

When ours leaked badly it turned out the overflow was not sealed - so deep baths were the issue.

He was sure there wasn't a leak. We did have the side of the bath off. He said the corner wasn't sealed any longer, and when you spray there with the shower, you can see it soak the floorboards (and make the ceiling downstairs drip, if you keep going!)

The first time he came, he said he could seal it up or we could have plastic put in that would make it easier to seal and he'd show me how to seal the plastic. I'm not very good at DIY, generally, I've got a shake from an old operation, and DP didn't want a white rim on the grey bath... so we went sealant. He knifed the old sealant off, resealed with window sealant in a gun, used a while roll of toilet roll (Shock) to tidy it up and said to fill the bath and leave it full for 12 hours, which we did.

It came away from the tiles at the top so he came back last week, and said we could just knife it off... but when he'd done it, he wasn't sure if it was still sealed, so he resealed half the bath. He didn't fill it up this time.

I genuinely don't know how we've ended up paying £150! It feels a bit raw as it's not actually fixed yet, and the plasterer has said the platter downstairs won't be too easy to fix because it's a really old house and they don't plaster like that anymore, so they want to knock more out and replaster a bigger area.
