For context, I used to be very overweight and unfit, mostly due to MH issues. I lost 38 kilos, and I've kept it off for 6 years now. I discovered I loved hiking and enjoy 10-15k hikes around the Brecon Beacons, for example.

I'm not a 'natural' sportsperson in any way. I'm very short, big bust, mild asthma, but I'm proud of my achievement and want to improve my fitness more so I recently started running. My legs are strong from the hikes but I am slow.

And I say running. Well. More sweaty, breathy jogging, really.

I ran jogged my first full non-stop 5k distance yesterday. I felt elated! I met a friend for coffee this afternoon and told her I'd managed my first 5k in 39 minutes and I was hoping next time I'd knock a minute or two off the time.

She actually scoffed and said she could walk 5k quicker than that. Then she changed the subject.

I can't believe I felt, and still feel, utterly deflated. I know it's really slow and an average time is 25-30 mins but is 39 mins embarrassingly awful?

I feel like throwing my running trainers away.

Shea probably jealous and wishes you were still overweight.
Please forget her stupid comment.
I couldn't run that.

mrswilson2 · 04/05/2019 15:36

Go to your parkrun. I did my first one last year my time was 43 minutes (and I wasn't last) , so balls to your 'friend '.
Everyone is really friendly and kind , people were going home before I'd finished but I didn't care , you feel so proud

Tell her to get stuffed Smile let us know how you get on.

MrsDrudge · 04/05/2019 15:45

Did your friend actually run 5k at all? No.
So even if you’d taken 5hrs to run it, it still beats her.
I think she is mean and YANBU. What a horrible “friend”, she should be congratulating you .

mumlikeaboss · 04/05/2019 15:55

So nice to find an AIBU thread where all the comments are unanimous!! 😁😁

You rock, OP - I tried to do C25K last summer on my treadmill but came unstuck around week 3 😳 and then got pregnant, haha... Definitely need to lose a lot more weight before attempting again, but would LOVE to be able to run that far in any time at all! Xx

LoveBlackpool · 04/05/2019 16:17

she's jealous of you and what you've achieved!

SlowStarters · 04/05/2019 16:19

Thank you so much for the support and kindness, honestly. I'm starting to question other comments from her now.

She's never been quite as bluntly negative as that with me before but she does say I'm high maintenance and a fussy eater now, if I order a meal with a salad instead of chips, for example. I don't think I'm fussy, it's just that it took two hard years to lose all of the weight so I'm determined to not put it back on!

On a positive note I walked the Parkrun route earlier (the proper event had finished) but I feel really excited to slow run it next week. I'll definitely update when I do Grin

Half way round I thought this is bonkers, I'm literally only here because of a MN thread, I was ready to give up and instead I'm planning my next 5k!

Thank you Flowers

SnapesGreasyHair · 04/05/2019 16:26

High maintenance because you eat salad!! Dear Lord....please distance yourself from her. Preferably 5k or more.

ContessaIsOnADietDammit · 04/05/2019 16:34

She's sounding more delightful by the minute OP!

Pass every utterance of hers through a "Could this person be jealous?" filter and you'll be fine - certainly don't take the remarks seriously.

MissFitton · 04/05/2019 16:36

Posting so I can see the update next Saturday for your first park run!

You've achieved amazing things already - getting into park run will be brilliant. I love it and I'm definitely a plodder. I genuinely look forward to my Saturday morning run now.

Rooting for you and the less said about your friend the better Star

NoSauce · 04/05/2019 16:43

You are fabulous OP. If you were my friend I would tell you so not put you down. Nobody nice would do that. Well done OP.

CountryPlumpkin · 04/05/2019 16:58

You go girl! I second all the comments above - you are awesome and she sounds awful, not someone you need polluting your positivity.
NB I am building up to 5k and have been feeling a bit low about my plodding pace, but reading about your fantastic achievement and all the lovely supportive comments has given me the confidence to keep going - who cares about speed?! I’m RUNNING! Big hugs to you x

DieselSucker · 04/05/2019 17:02

Well done you. Keep going and don't worry about what haters say. The feeling of finishing 5k without stopping is amazing, doesn't matter if it's 39min or 25min, the distance is the same.

Sashkin · 04/05/2019 17:08

Hey I run half marathons (trail running so up and down hills etc). My road 5k time is currently about 34mins. I don’t train for speed.

And 25mins is really good for female recreational runners, so don’t aim for that. I think my all-time best 5k time was about 29mins, and I was ecstatic to get below 30mins. 39 for a first attempt is fab.

JohnMcCainsDeathStare · 04/05/2019 17:10

I wonder if its because as far as she is concerned you have committed the crime of changing lanes. You used to be the fat, needy friend and I wonder if she is the sort who needs that to feel better about herself.

But now you are more confident and fitter, probably fitter than her and she doesn't like it so rather than take some inspiration she just wants to neg you.

Looks like you are about to lose even more weight in that without her in your life, you'll feel lighter!

Wanderingmind19 · 04/05/2019 17:25

Me and my friend run 5k ( we also did c25k) she does it in 27 minutes I do it in 35 ish but even then shes cheering me on at the end. That is a fast pace especially to keep up for 5k well done you !!!
Screw the so called friend ! Maybe ask her to come along next time and show you how its done if shes so good doubt shed be able to run much faster .
Dont put yourself down its an amazing achievement

Tessabelle74 · 04/05/2019 17:26

Next time you go running, invite her along and challenge her to a duel! Don't be deflated, you've achieved sine thing that many don't!

OneOf · 04/05/2019 17:27

You have done so well. Do not let your 'friend' take all the joy from your achievements.

MooseHoose's comment up thread : Share nothing with her about your fitness. Just turn up looking more and more fabulous every time.

And this post, above: it's because as far as she is concerned you have committed the crime of changing lanes. You used to be the fat, needy friend and I wonder if she is the sort who needs that to feel better about herself.

Spot on.

MsMarvellous · 04/05/2019 17:31

What you've achieved is brilliant and your so called friend is a knob.

GuyMartinsSideburns · 04/05/2019 17:32

Keep on it op, you’re badass Grin

chicken12 · 04/05/2019 17:32

That's no friend

GuyMartinsSideburns · 04/05/2019 17:32

So sorry if that reads as sarky! I honestly mean it nicely! Keep on and know you’re doing awesome x

GreigLaidlawsbarofsoap · 04/05/2019 17:33

OP you are amazing!! 6 stones lost and a first run of 39 minutes is absolutely brilliant. Most of my friends who have done 5k have had first times higher than that. You should absolutely be so proud of yourself.

She's not worth it.

Am looking forward to your next update next week! 🏃‍♀️🏅

pollymere · 04/05/2019 17:36

I had a friend who didn't want to know when I lost weight etc as she saw me as competition! She wanted me to be the person she saw to boost her ego. Obviously your new self confidence is denting her ego.

Margot33 · 04/05/2019 17:37

I personally think you did great. Well done you! I don't think your friend is very nice.

ForTheLoveOfDoughnuts · 04/05/2019 17:37

When I ran my first 5k I did it in 44 mins. 39 is brilliant! Your "friend" is a bitch.
