Hi all,

Looking at T-shirt’s recently in SportsDirect and saw Soulcal as a brand. Seems pretty nice. Some of the styles are nice, prices are good (2 ts for £12), 100% cotton etc.

But...and this is where my question comes in...is it some kind of brand associated with chavs / football hooligans etc like some others are?

Thanks

I associate it with Sports Direct. It's ok.

homeishere · 03/05/2019 16:05

That’s where I saw it. They bought Republic in 2013 (we’ll, Mike Ashley did) and took control of their sub brands like Soulcal.

I just don’t want to be walking about sporting some sort of clothing associated with hooligans etc.

As a former SD worker, SoulCal tends to be picked up by surfers or similar. Chavs go for Adidas/Nike/Puma etc. LA Gear isn't good quality but Lee Cooper and SoulCal are better. Firetrap is expensive compared to other brands in there usually but not worth it imo except the jeans maybe.

Went a bit off topic but yeah. SoulCal is a "safe" one if you're looking for that

Aimily · 03/05/2019 16:10

I have a couple of skirts that I bought when Soulcal was still in Republic. I like to think I'm not a chav, apparently I just keep hold of clothes for a very very long time... Just looked at when the Republic store in my city closed đŸ˜³

I personally wouldn't judge you for wearing Soulcal.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 03/05/2019 16:11

I don't think it's a brand that has any particular negative connotations - just Sports Direct.

StillMedusa · 03/05/2019 16:13

I really like Soulcal stuff... the hoodies, joggers and t shirts are nice and thick and wear well. My (adult) ds2 lives in their stuff when he's not at work and it isn't shiny and chavvy!

CarpetDiem · 03/05/2019 16:13

Your average chav wouldn't wear soulcal so don't worry. I associate it with people who like to be comfortable and wear sports wear all the time. Personally I prefer tshirts with no logos or advertising.

SouthernComforts · 03/05/2019 16:15

I like Soulcal stuff, good quality for the price. I bought it back when it was sold in Republic and I buy it now from SD.

Yayswimming · 03/05/2019 16:18

Love soulcal, I really miss Republic did they close everywhere?

homeishere · 03/05/2019 16:26

Thanks all. Yeah, I prefer unbranded where possible too, but it’s hard to find.

That’s a great question, OP.

I’ve often seen Soulcal in SD but I wondered whether it was a make deemed too young for my 40+ years? A bit like Superdry?

homeishere · 03/05/2019 16:44

It seems to me to be a cheaper Hollister. So yeah, I’m probably too old (35) for most of it, but some of the T-shirt’s and joggers would be ok I reckon.

A little bit like FatFace (well, some of it)

SweetMarmalade I know a fair few trendy older ladies. I don't see the problem with you wearing it if you want to.

But then I have the opposite problem. I view Seasalt and Edinburgh Woollen Mill as 'older' shops but love some of their stuff. I'd feel like I ws dressing too old for my age.

Have a look at their stuff and see if there's anything you like.

I used to wear a lot of SolCal around the year 2000, when I was about 35. I loved the shorts and t shirts for summer.
Once Republic went I'd forgotten about them.
I do t go into Sports Direct so hadn't realized the brand was still going.

Drogosnextwife · 03/05/2019 17:07

I liked it when one Republic (thanks for the reminder of the shops name notacooldad). But not so keen on their stuff now. Infact I wouldn't buy it I don't think.

I bought my dd a cardigan/jacket in sixth form. I've just replaced it as she finishes her third year at uni. She likes it and is definitely not a chav!
