4 hour unpaid work trail

Bellasorellaa · 03/05/2019 14:22

I have a work trial on Saturday which I agreed to go to however I was willing for one hour only

I am told today it will be 4 hours and there is no guarantee the job is yours after

It’s for a personal assistant to a woman with a disability

Would you take this?

I already have a job but looking for another. This one in particular had some benefits I wanted.

Unless it's really expensive in travel, I'd go for the experience. Maybe you'll just click.
That said, I wouldn't stay any longer if I decided it wasn't for me, even if that was only a few minutes. If you just love it after 4 hours, then you're in with a shout.

I wouldn't fancy a job that didn't offer you even interview expenses, though, cos that makes me think that they would be planning to take advantage.

Sarawish · 03/05/2019 17:19

Makes you wonder if this is just a way to get some free care if several people want the same job. They should pay, why do it for free, just taking the piss.
Cash in hand, forget it.

Bellasorellaa · 03/05/2019 17:21

I texted her back saying that as I would be cancelling appointments (I do hairdressing on the side) considering it is Saturdays could they tell me after two hours if I am right for the job as it is unpaid and I would be cancelling clients (not true just said it)

Mixed feelings on this. A trial should give you both a better idea of whether this role is a good fit than a 1 hour interview. A two or 3 stage selection process (not uncommon for many jobs) would often take longer than 4 hours, not including research and preparation.

The ‘cash in hand’ would ring alarm bells though.

Yabbers · 03/05/2019 17:42

An hour isn’t long enough to get to know if you are going to be the right fit for someone as an assistant. Four hours seems like a decent amount of time to know if it will work. I wouldn’t ever expect to do it unpaid though.

Yabbers · 03/05/2019 17:46

Cash in hand isn’t legal.
Not true. Paying cash is entirely acceptable as long as the employee declares it and the employer makes all the correct deductions.

Mrsjayy · 03/05/2019 17:56

My dd had a job last summer that was CIH but she got a payslip it was a cattery and the owner didn't always get to the bank,

SD1978 · 03/05/2019 17:58

It's a cash in hand hob, so not on the books, with no tax paid on earnings? If this is the case, then they can choose to give out their below board job however they want. If they want a trial and you don't- I'm sure for a tax free (if it is) cash in hand job with good pay, others will be willing to do it.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/05/2019 18:00

@Bellasorellaa great start - lying to a potential employer already! Honestly your heart is not in it, bin it off.

snowdrop6 · 03/05/2019 18:13

My daughter worked 4 hours on a Saturday at Superdrug and didn’t get the job,or paid for the work..a few of her friends applied for the job and worked the 4 hours and they didn’t get the job either.

keepondreaming · 03/05/2019 18:50

How much do you want the job? If it's the perfect one for you (location, pay, hours etc), then I'd do what's necessary to secure the position. If you're not that keen, then either ask beforehand for payment for your time or decline the interview. Only you know what's worth the most.

Bellasorellaa · 03/05/2019 18:55

Holly it’s not that deep. I can lie to who I want
She messaged back saying it was not enough time and I told her I wouldn’t be willing to work for free

She knows I have another job which is everyday and my hairdressing.

I got another job offer anyway recently I was gonna work both but this one doesn’t seem good

I think with such a personal job a 4 he trial is not too bad. I've just done a 6 hour one for a qualified role.. I really want the job but they have an amazingly friendly well blended team and seem to be nervous that I wouldn't fit. I did but want part time. The 6 hours spent showing my pure lovelyess has enabled me to negotiate a deal. I want part time, they want full BUT I fit the team so they will bend. I would see it as a chance to impress so well you can then negotiate better terms. That's if you want the job!

Bellasorellaa · 03/05/2019 18:58

I wanted to job but due to me being busy I would lose money going there, if I wasn’t already working it would be no problem but I literally make money everyday so anytime out for free is a lose to me

It should be banned tbh it’s free labour

The lady in question could just do endless four hour work trials and never pay anybody! I’m surprised this doesn’t happen more often, constant “trials” and no paid work.

Polarbearflavour · 03/05/2019 19:02

Running a catering business doing ad-hoc events like weddings? Simply “hire” some desperate people to do an 8 hour unpaid shift as a waiter. Thank them at the end but say you won’t be hiring them permanently. Rinse and repeat.

Would that be legal out of interest?

SD1978 · 03/05/2019 19:34

Bit you've already said you do t have any clients that day and have lied saying you do, and now you're saying you'd lose money by going. Honestly don't think this is the job for you. I did a trial with a lady when I was going to be her 'Saturday girl' and spend most of the day there. It gave us both a chance to see what we were getting into and a chance to see how it would go. Didn't get paid, got the job. Sounds like you have misgivings, so best not to continue really.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 03/05/2019 19:38

The cash in hand is the most alarming tbh and yes 4hours is too long
