To ask how to repair this relationship

I'm someone who completely hates rejection and confrontation. If I know someone has an issue with me my initial reaction is to back off and withdraw. I become really guarded and just don't want much to do with that person. I am not mean or anything like that but avoid/ keep my distance/ don't really talk to them. This has happened to me with someone.

Looking at it, it's probably not a good idea to be like this and the best course of action is to still be friendly and chatty with them.

It's been a long time now I don't know if the relationship can be salvaged. I don't want to be bear friends or anything but don't want to carry on like this.

Ever thought about having some counselling? Rejection and some confrontation (I don't mean aggression) is part of life. Not everyone will like you or agree with you and vice versa

It's hard to tell from that description, but if this friend has a problem because of something you said/did then the best way to repair the friendship is to apologise and ask to talk about it. Listen to what they have to say and try very very hard to not automatically defend your actions/words (from personal experience I know this is crazy hard). Instead take the comments on board and use them to attempt to better yourself. It's up to you OP if you think the effort is worth it or not for this friend but I wish you luck :)

Not all confrontation has to be negative.
