Cheap places to stay in London for hospital appointments

My 5 year old son is under a specialist for his eyes at GOSH and will need to be seen every other day for a few weeks over the summer. It will cost a fortune in time/money to keep travelling back and forth to the midlands so we are looking at staying for the 2/3 weeks. I’ve looked at travelodge etc. But it’s still beyond our budget sadly. I’ve even looked into house/pet sitting there but can’t find anything that fits in with our dates.

Has anyone got any ideas of cheaper accommodation in reasonable parts of London? We have asked the hospital but because he is a day patient we don’t qualify for anything.

If it’s on/off, ie not lots of nights in a row, then Holiday Inn Finsbury Park might work. Super quick travel in from there. Airbnb is pricey if it’s stop start cos of cleaning...

See if you can stay in the Ronald McDonald house.

For the tube it can be payg or weekly fare. You have a daily cap that a pp mentioned. It can be quite pricey but children under 12 don't pay and buses are quite cheap £20/ week I believe, all zones included. The tube will depend on the zone.

Try hotels further out in Walthamstow or anywhere along the Victoria line. There are also a lot of hotels in Ilford which is not lovely but safe and well connected on the train. I think realistically you are going to struggle to get something less than £40-50 a night.

the nearest stations will be Holborn, Picadilly Line/Central line
Or Chancery lane, central line. Look along those for air bnb or cheap hotels.

If over the summer, then university halls might be a good bet.

LSE and I think UCL/Kings rent out their student accommodation over the summer - they’re tiny little rooms so not that pricy.

Definitely ask at the hospital, there is accommodation linked to Barts around the Old Street area, so only a tube ride from GOSH. Hoping all treatment goes well x

Russell Square on the Piccadilly is the nearest tube, but Holborn on the central line is only five minute walk, cut up through old Gloucester Street into queens square and you are at GOSH. So I would be looking at accommodation at either end of those lines. They are both very busy lines during the rush hour so I hope your appointments are late morning, early afternoon. If you have a buggy Russell Square is lift only, Holborn is escalator only.

Corams Fields is just around the corner from GOSH and is a lovely child friendly park to let off steam in, no adults allowed in unless accompanied by a child .

The Brunswick shopping centre opposite Russell Square tube has chain restaurants like giraffe and there is also a wait rose or a tesco metro for sandwiches and snacks if you want to get out of the hospital. If the weather is nice you could have a picnic in Queens Square or Corams Fields.

Hope everything goes well.

Ask your local vicar if they can help you secure lodgings.

Here's another homestay/airbnb type option. It's focused on visiting dcotors so you can search for properties close to GOSH: www.doctorhouse.co.uk/

And also: sabbaticalhomes.com. Here are some possibilities: www.sabbaticalhomes.com/Home_Rent_House_Rental_London_United_Kingdom_98875.htm (studio flat, 20 mins on the Piccadilly line)

www.sabbaticalhomes.com/Home_Rent_House_Rental_London_United_Kingdom_49821.htm (2 bed house on the Central Line)

Airbnb. I had to go up for an appointment awhile back and stayed in Clapham for £90 a night in a very nice 2 bed flat with a garden. There’s plenty more out there if you can be flexible on location.

Also hub hotels. There is one near Goodge Street (which is close ish to GOSH). It’s getting more expensive now because it’s getting closer to summer. But I stayed there a few weeks ago (it’s right near my office) for £75 a night.

Thank you! I will plough through those suggestions tonight!
