This isn't an aibu but posting here for traffic!!
Went to the dentist today and they said they need to refer me to the hospital to have my wisdom teeth out, apparently my wisdom tooth is half up and through but the other half is stuck under my bone!!
What I'm wondering is will I have to be put to sleep or is this something they'll do whilst I'm awake? Also what's the pain like after and healing time?
I'm being a wimp!! I had a c section and didn't panic this much!! Thankyou in advance xx

Probably awake, and yes it will hurt after, for 4-6 days.

loveheart27 · 02/05/2019 19:09

How will they get it out from under my bone? Xx

I had mine done under GA but it was in the late 70s so things might have changed.

user1493413286 · 02/05/2019 19:11

I was awake for this although could have chosen to be awake. I had it on the Friday and was back at work on Monday although on painkillers for a week at first every 4 hours with co-codomol. I was prescribed diazepam to take the night before and that morning to help me keep calm which really helped. Also soft food for 2-3 days.

I’ve also had a c section - that recovery is much worse.

Beachbodynowayready · 02/05/2019 19:12

I had a wisdom tooth out awake and managed a cheese sandwich that afternoon!

IsYourGoogleBroken · 02/05/2019 19:15

I've had all 4 of mine out, and the roots were hooked under. No idea how they get it out, but I was awake, come to think of it, so was DS when he had his out, and he also has the hooks on the roots.

The dentist really is the best person to be asking.

TBH, csections are a doddle, tooth pain is hell on earth

WatchingFromTheWings · 02/05/2019 19:17

I was partially sedated twice for wisdom tooth removal. First time I actually slept through it! Second time I was awake but woozy and didn't feel a thing. Just took paracetamol/ibuprofen for a few days after.

Thankgoodness1 · 02/05/2019 19:31

I had all four out in 1998 and they gave me general anaesthetic. It was awkward to eat from what I remember but pain passed quickly.

kaytee87 · 02/05/2019 19:40

I've had all 4 out, they will numb you and give you sedation but not a GA.
I remember the whole thing clearly (don't think the sedation worked), but it was fine.
I had the following day off work then after that I was fine. Only 2 had slightly emerged.

I took arnica for a while beforehand and had minimal swelling / bruising.

SorrelForbes · 02/05/2019 19:44

If you're having wisdom teeth out in hospital, then I would say that it will be under a GA. It's a really minor op and you'll be a bit sore afterwards for a couple of says but nothing that pain killers can't cope with!

Bringbackthestripes · 02/05/2019 19:45

I had all 4 out under GA at the hospital. I was so swollen afterwards that my neck actually vanished and my chin just merged into my chest. Even a straw was too fat to fit in my lips! I did have a few sleepless nights due to the pain, sat on the sofa watching odd TV shows, but it passed quickly enough and the swelling went down pretty quick.

Queenie8 · 02/05/2019 19:49

I had the same problem as you Love, I had a GA, they either chipped away/removed a sliver of the jaw bone. I have a slight divot in my jaw, but only noticeable if you run your finger across the bone.

I had dreadful neuralgia too.

The pain wasn't horrific afterwards, achey and uncomfortable for 48 hours. I had the op on the Thursday and was back to work on the Monday.

I had the surgery 25 years ago, so it may be totally different now. I don't regret having it done.

SteelRiver · 02/05/2019 19:49

I think I was under some type of local anesthetic and, because it was a complex removal like the OPs, the drugs used meant I wouldn't be able to remember the procedure.

MondeoFan · 02/05/2019 19:54

I had it done about a month ago and I was awake. Had 3 injections to numb then they cut my gum and it was out. Very sore for about 10 days after

SorrelForbes · 02/05/2019 19:54

Had one removed under GA (my choice) a year ago. I have issues with my jaw dislocating and moving into very painful uncomfortable positions so I wasn't impressed to discover that the pain I suffered for weeks after was because whatever they did while I was asleep knocked it out of alignment and the swelling meant I couldn't get it back in place for weeks. I cried so much. Couldn't eat a thing because I couldn't open my mouth. Tried to tell a health care pro I thought this wasn't normal but wasn't helped. I wish they'd done the other one at the same time. Because there's no way in hell I trust them again (though this is a very different area to where I had it done a year ago and they might actually be mindful of my jaw issues.) I'm pretty much an isolated case and I wouldn't suggest you don't go and get yours removed, the benefits of having problematic wisdom teeth removed is worth going through stuff. But if you ever have clicky jaw issues then make sure they know before the procedure to spare you going through what I did.

NannyPear · 03/05/2019 09:18

I've had two out - one was uncomplicated that the dentist could take out and it was sore for a bit afterwards but generally not too bad. Done under local and couldn't feel anything and took 10 seconds to extract.

More recently I had a complicated one taken out at the dental hospital. I chose to have it done with just local anaesthetic. If I ever needed it again I'd definitely get sedation or a GA! It was awful tbh. The recovery was also awful BUT I was pregnant so could only take paracetamol so I assume it wouldn't be so bad if you could take ibuprofen with it.

WhiskersPete · 03/05/2019 10:43

I had all four out at once and was given the choice. I chose GA and don’t regret it.

WhiskersPete · 03/05/2019 10:45

Should add - mine were badly impacted

Uggywuggy · 03/05/2019 10:55

I had my bottom two out under GA. For both, I had to have jaw bone removed. To be honest, the pain after wasn’t near as bad as I’d expected! And I got to eat lots of vanilla custard, so I was pretty happy with that.

I was quite bruised though, maybe because my teeth were impacted they really had to be rough to get them out?! Hence the GA.

It was the second time I had those teeth done too, ergh!!
