But GW says he didnt speak to a journo. This has not been investigated and proven.

DialDownTheIanPaisley · 02/05/2019 16:06

I thought GW said he spoke to the journalist, but about other things?

m0therofdragons · 02/05/2019 16:06

Journalists are not obliged to reveal their sources. If they did then nobody would tell them anything.

IsYourGoogleBroken · 02/05/2019 16:08

The Telegraph have stated it isnt GW this morning (according to twitter)

A journo would have to disclose in court though.

IsYourGoogleBroken · 02/05/2019 16:08
  • I retract that - sorry - misinformed
redskyattwilight · 02/05/2019 16:13

He has said he did speak to the journalist but about EU elections and Brexit. Surely if GW is telling the truth and that therefore someone else is the leaker, the journalist would personally feel to preserve their conscience to put the record straight?

Journos protect their sources at all costs, though couid be compelled by a court to reveal (or face conviction for contempt if they don't).

As we don't know why they have concluded GW did it, or how the leak reached The Telegraph, I'm not surprised no journos are immediately in the frame.

One (speculative) scenario is that there is a third party, who received info from GW and then passed it to someone at The Telegraph. So it might not be obvious who was the recipient, though editors would clearly know (and it's probably an open secret amongst staff)

I see. Such a murky world and goodness know the sort of stuff that a) doesn't get printed but is happening and b) the interpretation of what journalist hear and subsequently report has happened.

A high profile story such as this would have been carefully considered before publication, and the newspaper must have been very sure of the source before lighting the blue touchpaper

'Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?' came to my mind.....
