To think this is more than depression

Posting here for traffic!

I have a long history with depression and low level bpd. I have been going through a bad patch and drs have got me on sertraline 100mg while I wait for intensive cbt and then more therapy.

The thing is I have been really struggling with my memory especially I work. I forget how to do things I have been doing for years (I am a duty manager and it makes me look incompetent) and names.

The other day I was staring at someone who I see and speak to a lot at work and I just couldn't remember her name for some paperwork so I left it and came back when I remembered. I've done this more than once lately. I also zone out and struggle to wake up but not much and I'm not so worried about that

Does anyone have any experience with this and can reassure me that it's okay and normal?

I have no experience but sounds like maybe if possible you need a lower dose of the medication? Maybe its making you too foggy.

FaithInfinity · 02/05/2019 17:40

Have us had any bloods done? Sometimes physical health problems can make you feel depressed. It’s worth looking into.

FaithInfinity · 02/05/2019 17:40

Have you

Tolleshunt · 02/05/2019 17:41

Sounds like it could be the SSRI. They can cause brain fog, forgetfulness, etc.

Gwynfluff · 02/05/2019 17:41

I’d second a blood test. I’m like this when I am anaemic

Memory loss can be caused by being on anti-depressant medication. My family member who suffers clinical unipolar depression has noticeable memory problems and one of their meds is 100mg Sertaline. It has been checked out and other things ruled out. Doctor says it is caused by the depression but I don't necessarily accept that. It didn't seem to occur on previous anti-depressants.

Summersunsareglowing · 02/05/2019 17:51

Are you on other meds for your BPD such as anti-psychotics?

R2G · 02/05/2019 17:54

Have you had checks to see if you are menopausal. This happened to my friend she thought she was going senile. It was the menopause

ItsMilkAndEggsBitch · 02/05/2019 18:07

I have regular check ins with the gp at the moment but the memory loss is only really recently after my last check in. I'm not on any more medication but I feel better that it's a known side effect. Does it generally wear off I really don't want it to affect my work anymore Sad

Could be dissociation which is very common in BPD.

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 02/05/2019 18:28

I was put on Sertraline for anxiety and this kind of thing was happening to me which is why I came off it. Could it be the medication?

Lovetunnocks · 02/05/2019 18:29

How old are you? Could you be menopausal? It has given me TERRIBLE brain fog (to the point that it's threatening my job).

Lovetunnocks · 02/05/2019 18:29

Ha! Cross post with R2G.

Tolleshunt · 02/05/2019 19:09

It can get better in some people, once they get used to the SSRI, but in others it persists. No way of telling which camp you will fall into without sucking and seeing, unfortunately.

2cats2many · 02/05/2019 19:12

How old are you? Could it be perimenopause on top of everything else? My brain is a total sieve at the moment.

ItsMilkAndEggsBitch · 02/05/2019 21:06

I'm 32. I have been in a chemical induced menopause a couple of times but I'm out of it now and have been for 7 weeks so with when it stopped and this started I don't think they line up.

I'm actually starting to scare myself with it cause I can feel it getting worse and it's making my anxiety soar

Tolleshunt · 02/05/2019 21:59

I know it hard, but try not to worry. Extra anxiety will just make things worse. It's temporary, one way or the other. It might help to remind s yourself of that, and then distract yourself with somethjng else.

JammyGem · 02/05/2019 23:44

I had this when I first started on sertraline, when I stopped taking it for a little while, and again when I was pregnant (was back on the sertraline by then)

It was really embarrassing and there's only so many times you can shrug it off to others as tiredness. I'd definitely have a word with your GP.

ItsMilkAndEggsBitch · 03/05/2019 11:28

Thank you everyone. I think I'm just going to have to at least tell my general manager incase she thinks I'm no good at my job as she is relatively new to our workplace. I really do hope it settles down
