OP I'm wondering if you do actual mean homeopathy

homeopathy is - well you've seen the science

but if you are thinking to see a person about diet, nutrition or herbs, that's totally different.

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:02

@glueandstick I'm not a journalist. You said you'd tried it and it did nothing so I was just asking what you tried it for and what in the end actually helped you get better. I have several autoimmune diseases and feel that I've had so many blood tests, scans, pills and supplements and nothing seems to help. I was interested to know if you had long term type illness and was it diet or what that helped and how you got the doctor to see it through holistically as I feel my doctor just checks everything is not cancer etc or treats each thing one by one. If I was a journo at midnight I'd advise better work life balance for a start.

Thanks @rosa anything that might help really! The person I am thinking of seeing is a homeopath but also offers nutrition, reiki and other things. I'm just trying to decifer what I think is best routes as some people's anecdotes are powerful and I'm trying to weigh up or also hear from people who've tried it or similar, thought it was rubbish and what they actually did in the end that helped them.

OP posts:
M3lon · 02/05/2019 00:05

op did it help at all?

No, it didn't help with my migraines. Now I'm an adult and make my own medication decisions I control them with a targeted medication developed to actual work. That was a decade of unnecessary pain, thanks to my Mother and her belief in homeopathy.

My sister faired worse than me, what with asthma being a fatal condition if not treated. She nearly died. Happily the hospital saved her life by putting her on some effective steroid based medication.

My Mother, in the meantime, mentally rewrote this history as both of our symptoms getting worse when we started taking drugs. She took to her grave the idea that we'd all have been better off if we'd stuck with homeopathy. its odd because she was extremely bright and entirely rational in all areas but this one.

MissConductUS · 02/05/2019 00:09

Homeopathy is highly effective at making your purse lighter with no danger of there being any actual benefit. It's a pseudo science. There's no evidence that it works and the theory behind it is transparent nonsense.

I'm an RN with an autoimmune disease. It would be nice if it helped, but it won't, other than making you feel a bit more in control and proactive. Your immune system won't notice a thing.

Davros · 02/05/2019 00:12

I tried it many years ago, before I had looked into what it actually is (or is not!). I was referred to the Homeopathic hospital in Queen's Square in the days when the NHS funded homeopathy. So it didn't cost me anything but it was still useless Mumbo jumbo. I looked into it properly after that experience, never again

OP

I once had an illness that didn't respond to about 9 sets of antibiotics in a 6 month period - they thought it might be Epstein Barr or related.

I was quite desperate to feel better but also very aware that a million charlatans out there would take my money. So in the end I just asked advice from Neals Yard and bought a couple of herbal things from them.

I won't say for sure that it made me better; it might have been time. But at least I only spent about £12 in the pursuit of trying to feel better. They didn't seem like they were trying to sell me tons of stuff; in fact they only recommended one item, I just bought some herbal tea as well!

I hope you recover asaply!

RosaWaiting · 02/05/2019 00:13

*well, the possible Epstein Barr was raised after the 9 sets of antibiotics, not before!!

JapaneseNotWeed · 02/05/2019 00:13

It must work. You should see the homeopathists in my local pub on an early Friday evening. They’re normally barred after their first can of Shandy Bass.

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:14

@m3lon thank you and sorry to hear about those experiences. I am asthmatic too. Perhaps as adults you're not that closely linked to your sisters medical stuff now but I was wondering if yoy might know if she had any other auto immune type illnesses and if she changed her diet for example to help with asthma such as dairy. FWIW I take a steroid inhaler (it's like a mix of brown and blue together) and wouldn't stop it even if trying non traditional medicine. Likewise some other medicines I take. Thanks x

Have tried a few and found one who has given consistently brilliant results. For me and the kids. Usually just gives tablets which you take 3 x a day.
He's also a GP so can give allopathic medicine too so he can give antibiotics etc too.
We have always tried homeopathy first and only ever needed western medicine once in 5 years. I don't understand the science behind it but delighted it has worked for us.

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:16

@davros thanks. Please can I ask why you were referred and in the end what did help?

Reiki on the other hand is very interesting. I decided to get qualified in that and am now a Reiki master. You can become one too by the way in exchange for £19.99 - eg here

Or I can just do you some distance attunements from here if you prefer?

I mean it may be difficult for you to tell I'm doing it...and in fact just as hard for me to tell if I'm doing it...but we will pretend it all makes some sort of sense and hopefully one or both of us will feel better for it.....

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:18

Thanks @rosa

@missconductus with regards to your auto immune, what helps?

I see a really good reflexologist every two weeks for a number of health issues including neck and back pain that result in headaches and I also have thyroid issues, it does wonders for me. She can tell how I’m feeling from working through my feet... for example she knows when my headaches are bad as my big toes are crunchy in the top.... when she’s worked them my headaches lift to the extent I feel light headed due to the contrast within an hour... I limp to my two weekly appointment and come out feeling amazing.

Bigearrings I have had flare ups for nearly 40 years they appear and disappear. Some times they last days others have lasted much, much longer but they vanish as suddenly as the arrive. A few years ago I had about a month of reacting to something - on that occasion it took the form of swollen lips, earlobes and the whites of my eyes. I was seeing the GP and trying to figure out what was happening when it just stopped. If I'd tried an treatment medical or alternative at the time I would had thought it was successful but the fact is there was something environmental that was causing my reaction that went away - I've no idea what though it could have been a particular pollen (but it hasn't happened again since) or a chemical that a neighbour had used in a DIY project that they finished who knows?

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:21

Thanks @toddlermom

I forgot to add my Reflexologist balances my whole endocrine system (to ensure all my glands work together and in harmony with each other) I definitely feel the benefits from this procedure.

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:24

@nonoandno that sounds great. I have had reflexology years ago when pregnant it was lovely

op I believe my sister has also tried various exclusion diets to help but I'm not aware that any of them did.

Changing the food you put in yourself is in no way comparable to the rest of the nonsense you are considering.

Of course the food you intake can and does affect the biochemistry of your body. The key thing is not to try random made up bullshit methods for selecting said foods, but talk to someone with some genuine real medical qualifications in the area who can advise you what type of changes are more or less likely to make a difference. Then you need to be incredibly careful about keeping accurate notes of the effects and if possible get a third party to help monitor you.

I know someone who was convinced their baby was reacting badly to their breastmilk and went on a mad rampage of exclusions while waiting for an allergy test. By the time the baby got seen she has ruled out gluten, dairy, garlic, all hot spices, celery and strawberries.

The baby had no sign of allergy or intolerance in any of the tests done. Friend went back to eating instead of stressing and magically the problems cleared up.

People see patterns...we can't help it...we just always do it...whether they are there or not. It would be awful to make an error and end up making your life harder for no actual benefit. So be careful when measuring the success of any dietary changes!

Abra1de · 02/05/2019 00:25

My son had more serious illness after treatment over a period than he had before.

R2G · 02/05/2019 00:27

Thanks Abra sorry to hear that
