AIBU most workplaces are awful?

Really fed up with work at the moment. I've been working for 20 years. In that time I've worked at several places, and apart from a few exceptions they have all been horrible places to work. Bitchy colleagues, bullies, psychopathic bosses, unfair practices etc. Aibu to think most workplaces are awful?

I'm not saying work should be constant fun and everyone has to be lovely all the time. I'm a good employee and get on well with people. I simply want to go to work, do a good job, maintain good working relationships with colleagues and go home. Talking to friends, a lot of them are also having similar problems at work,

Hopefully I'm being unreasonable and my experience is the exception. Rant over! Grin

Nah, my work is stressful, underpaid, understaffed, under resourced, far too much government interference and cocking things up, but the people are amazing. Completely makes it worthwhile , as does the nature of the work we do, even when it's really tough you still get a laugh, a smile, a cup of tea and a hug if you want one

isseywithcats · 01/05/2019 21:44

i do two seperate jobs and apart from the odd person who is an arsehole i can honestly say both places are good places to work for with some lovely people who work there especially the second job, yes everyone has bad days at work and when i have worked at places that didnt suit my personality or were awful to work at i went job hunting and moved somewhere better

EmmaC78 · 01/05/2019 21:46

I have had 5 jobs since graduating and have enjoyed them all. In that time i have only met a handful of people i dislike.

Polarbearflavour · 01/05/2019 21:47

I’ve never had a job I like.

I’m firmly in the Reddit Antiwork subreddit camp!

mogloveseggs · 01/05/2019 21:48

The people are the only thing that keeps me going at my work. Even the bosses are lovely most of the time

Witchofzog · 01/05/2019 21:50

I think it depends on what sort of work you do. I worked in call centres years ago where there were bitchy people and unfair practices galore. I then retrained in healthcare and most people I have worked with have been lovely. What sort of job do you do?

MsVestibule · 01/05/2019 21:54

I've worked in loads of places and generally enjoyed my job and got on well with my colleagues in all of them - they've often been the best part of working.

Except where I work now. The work is incredibly easy, it's local and the hours are flexible. However, 3 out of 4 of my immediate colleagues never talk to me unless it's work related or I instigate a conversation. They're really chummy with each other, though. I think this is quite rare, at least in my experience.

ASauvignonADay · 01/05/2019 21:54

I love my job, great environment, great building, great colleagues.

BillywilliamV · 01/05/2019 21:56

I am a believer in - if you think everyone is a problem then maybe the problem is you?

I love my work colleagues, had some shit jobs but generally loved my colleagues. Sorry!

Polarbearflavour · 01/05/2019 21:57

My current work place that I’m leaving as I resigned is awful. All military personnel, nobody talks to me, no heating etc.

I’ve worked in better jobs before that have been okay - and with nice people.

I think a vast majority of jobs are bullshit jobs. I resent having to sit in an office all day doing meaningless work and I can’t wait for my lottery / premium bonds win!

AngelaJ18 · 01/05/2019 21:58

I’ve worked in retail my whole career so ....

I’ve been fairly lucky, I’ve always liked most of the people I worked with & I steer clear of the gossip chain because I dislike people being bitchy when the person they’re talking about isn’t around to respond. The worst thing about my job is customers, a lot of them are rude and it can be hard to be yelled at when you know you’ve done nothing wrong.

Iwantacookie · 01/05/2019 21:59

Every place I've worked unless you were brown nosing the boss you got stuck with the shit.
I hate it. I might of well just practiced my brown nosing skills at school. That's all that's been needed to get anywhere.

Chickoletta · 01/05/2019 22:10

Love my job. It's hard work but I have amazing colleagues who often make me laugh until I cry. There are a few people who work with me (same environment, role, perks etc) who are miserable about it though. In my case, I think this shows that your attitude has a lot to do with how much you enjoy your job.

Redwalk · 01/05/2019 22:15

I have just moved job and was working in the last place ten years. They were just arseholes! It's the only way to describe them (apart from the odd exception). Egotistical, patronizing, a huge blame culture and generally just not a very nice or healthy environment. The new place I swear to God is like a breath of fresh air. Been there six months and can't believe I spent so long in my last job. There is something better out there for you, there are better people, better cultures and better jobs. Life is too short is my advice.

ilovesooty · 01/05/2019 22:15

I've just left my last workplace to concentrate on self employment. However in 15 years in a range of different settings I was generally very happy.

I think if you've never had a job you liked and found all your work pointless you are the problem.

Redwalk · 01/05/2019 22:19

Just noticed your username OP. Love it

JustCallMeSliths · 01/05/2019 22:21

Has varied for me. I tend to find that organisations of around 80 people seem to be best. Enough to avoid (most) people if you need to but not so big you just feel like a part or don't know anyone.

I actually like my current workplace. Job is dull but it's a good organisation and most of the people are great.

Polarbearflavour · 01/05/2019 22:21

But many jobs ARE pointless. It’s a fact. I don’t know anybody who actively loves their job. It’s just a job. As I’ve said, I’ve had okay jobs and nice colleagues but working in some office is never going to be enjoyable. I can think of 100 things I would rather be doing.

Not sure if that was aimed at me I lovesooty. Some of us have seen the light anyway about bullshit jobs and the system that we live in. Hopefully they’ll be change within our lifetimes.

I’m looking forward to not working after my current job ends! I’ve got a few more books on my Kindle to read whilst I waste time over the next few days.

idontlike789 · 01/05/2019 22:22

I'm inclined to agree with you op . I've been in my current job less than a year was really enthusiastic as was a really growing company . Totally sucking the life out of me recently. My manager will email you if you clock in 1 minute late will pull staff on every petty thing and speak to staff like at school . So demotivating , I dont think it has to be like that but they seam bemused re the staff turnover Hmm.

SolitudeAtAltitude · 01/05/2019 22:24

I am always astounded by the levels if incompetence and blagging

"The Office" is so close to real office life, the incompetence and weird managers but also the camaraderie and solidarity Grin

stressedoutpa · 01/05/2019 22:27

Yes, my experience is that work has got much harder and workplaces are far more hostile, workloads heavier, etc. Not sure of other jobs but most PA jobs are hideous now.

I changed career last year and although new job/workplace isn't perfect it is much better overall.

ilovesooty · 01/05/2019 22:28

Not all jobs are bullshit jobs. Whether I've been happy at work or not I've always done jobs that needed doing and where I was making some kind of difference.

I still think if you've never liked any job you've done you're the problem.

Chocmallows · 01/05/2019 22:28

When I don't like my work it is often as I'm not in a good frame of mind.

When I'm confident and relaxed most of it is ok to good. If I feel run down I hate it!

Finebyme99 · 01/05/2019 22:28

I love my job! I love what I do and my colleagues are amazing too. Can’t imagine working somewhere where I was unhappy!
Sometimes I don’t even feel like I’m doing a job - just something I love and getting paid for it!

Ragwort · 01/05/2019 22:30

I’ve never had a job that I hated, maybe I have been very lucky but I have always enjoyed my work, most colleagues have been very pleasant, never had any bitchiness at work, the occasional boss has been a bit of a waste of space and sometimes ‘policy changes’ have meant times of tedious bureaucracy but in general terms I am happy at work. Smile.

I actually really do love my current job & very happily offer to work weekends & Bank Holidays (no extra pay Wink).
