Anti-Semitism

Has the world gone mad?

I live in NY and anti-semitic crimes have doubled in the past year.

WTF is going on?

To a large extent, because Netanyahu and the IHRA have both put so much effort onto broadening the definition of Anti-Semitism that it now encompasses thoughts and feelings that were previously not defined as such.

I'm not sure there is an actual increase in hate crime as such.

TheInebriati · 01/05/2019 16:53

You think that thoughts are reported as hate crimes now? okay.

''A gunman shot and killed 11 worshipers at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh on Oct. 27''
''The attack was one of 39 reported physical assaults on Jews in 2018, a 105 percent increase over the previous year, according to the ADL.''

Really, Green? What on earth do you base this on, apart from your own anti-Semitism?

If you're "not sure", why not look at the overwhelming evidence? Perhaps start here:

I think A-S is slightly different in the USA. Remember the white supremacists marching at Charlottesville chanting 'Jews will not replace us'? I can't imagine similar happening here.

Jews are only a small fraction of the UK population. 250,000? Most of the A-S in the news seems to involve the Far Left, now in an influential position in the Labour Party. Not just because of Palestine, but as part of the Marxist anti-capitalist position.

In both cases, anti-semitism in the USA and anti-Islam in the UK, the common denominator seems to be the rise of Far Right, white supremacist groups.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 01/05/2019 17:13

A lot of latent antisemitism, on both the Right and the Left, has been crawling out of the woodwork in the past couple of years. All it takes is a few people in positions of authority to tacitly (and in some cases not so tacitly) support it, and it re-emerges.

Years ago, a Jewish friend taught me the words to 'National Brotherhood Week'. They seem unfortunately apposite at the moment.

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 01/05/2019 17:33

I read an article not so long ago that stated only 1% of Frances population is Jewish and yet 40% of the country’s hate crimes are anti Semitic and this is not a new and has quietly been going in for years.
Frances Jewish population has been decreasing as Jews just feel unsafe so are moving to Israel, America and now in larger numbers to Canada.

araiwa · 01/05/2019 17:50

Doubled sounds a lot worse than an increase of 20 using a pp's stats

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 01/05/2019 18:00

It’s not anti-semitism on the rise, it’s all hate crime towards minority groups. Trump and the far right nutters are causing this.

sunshinesupermum · 01/05/2019 18:03

Nope don't agree with this. There is far more Jew hate (anti Semitism) on line and IRL than I've ever experienced before. Many people say they are anti Zionist (anti Israel) to cover up their anti Semitism.

Firstworddinosaur · 01/05/2019 18:11

I think racism is on the rise everywhere. It's terrifying.

ForalltheSaints · 01/05/2019 18:15

ThatssomebadhatHarry true about Trump (and others such as Le Pen and Wilders in Europe), but in the UK we have the Labour Party refusing to act in a timely manner when their own members make anti-semitic comments.

BogglesGoggles · 01/05/2019 18:22

Changing demographics probably play a part. The influx of migrants from Muslim countries coupled with the younger generation knowing less about the holocaust. The delay in parenthood also cones to mind.

Strivetobe · 01/05/2019 18:26

I have perceived that it is rising in the UK. I am Jewish and the past couple of years have seen and been the victim of far more anti semitism than before. anti-Semitic attitudes are seemingly becoming a lot more normalised. For example, I was at a Halloween party where one of the guests turned up as a concentration camp victim. He wore blue striped pyjamas, had painted black circles around his eyes and was covered in fake blood. I was utterly horrified and was expressing my shock to other guests. Most of them didn't see any problem with it because 'he's just trying to be edgy'. Absolutely appealing.

Appaling * sorry
