To be baffled by how everyone on MN claims to have a really stressful job

Or their DH does. Or they both do.
What exactly is so stressful about your jobs? Does everyone work in Intensive Care or are you being a bit dramatic about the pressures of your job?

People yell at us.

T1nah · 01/05/2019 13:46

Who yells at you?

Both me and DH are care workers. There are days I walk out of work and feel it's been a good day and all is well, other days I have to take myself to the toilet to cry because it's so stressful. Different jobs have different pressures, I don't think it's that hard to believe that most people have stressful jobs and I think you are being unreasonable to call people 'dramatic' for finding them so.

TeenTitans · 01/05/2019 14:00

I think people who have stressful jobs are more likely to comment about how stressful their job is. That's the issue.

BroomstickOfLove · 01/05/2019 14:02

My job isn't stressful. I used to be a teacher, and that was horribly stressful. I had nightmares for years after I left.

AudacityOfHope · 01/05/2019 14:03

I am stressed right now but it's not a bad stress. I'm doing something I've never done before and it's really fucking hard, but I love my job a lot.

DH has a job he could do in his sleep; he earns good money and isn't career-oriented so it's enough for us.

We're really, really lucky. Not loaded but we've got enough.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/05/2019 14:03

My job is bog standard, it can be stressful during busy periods, when I finish my shift, the job is done.
I used to have a great job, long hours, constantly on call before I had DC.
The only part I find stressful is juggling shifts around DP and the DC.

Nquartz · 01/05/2019 14:04

I'm a buyer for a well known high street retailer, given the current retail climate my job is very stressful at times, there's redundancies every 2/3 years, no bonus anymore, minimal pay rises.

It is quite cyclical too so at certain times it is much busier & pressured than others.

mindutopia · 01/05/2019 14:05

I don’t have a stressful job (though it is a high earning professional one), but I do have a long, sometimes stressful commute (6 hours a day). I only go into my office 3 days a week though, but it can be tiring (i do 6am-7pm days, last night I wasn’t home til 9pm with train delays!). My dh is self employed, that can be stressful at busy times, but not most days. Not much stress here, though I could do with an extra hour of sleep every morning, if I was allowed to be picky!

Prequelle · 01/05/2019 14:06

I think everyone thinks their job is stressful, it's natural to do so.

I picked up am agency shift on a ward that is all elective patients, the nursing ratios are fantastic and it's basically lovely. But the nurses were very flustered and talking about how busy they were. I couldn't understand it personally but hey ho

At Christmas during winter pressures these nurses were drafted into the acute wards (including my own) and some of them ended up crying, some ended up going home after half a shift because of just how bad it is. It's 13 patients all trying to die on you at once, needing attention at once, or needing close observation post op, or having dementia and being wandersome and/or lashing out... all whilst being pressured to discharge and admit new patients when you're barely coping with the ones you've got. Plus their families. Every single minute there's at least 20 things that need doing and each time one is done another - if not more- is added. It's no breaks no drinks and going home late.

But that doesn't mean the other nurses job isn't stressful. I'm sure it absolutely is to them, but because others have worked on busier places we have climatised and just got used to a different level of stress.

It's the same with any job. I'm sure my DPs office job is stressful to him and it's why I never ever scoff at him for saying he's tired or had a bad day, even if someone has died on me. Stress isn't a competition

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 01/05/2019 14:10

Criminal barrister. V. stressful.

PurplePiePete · 01/05/2019 14:10

high volume of workload at significant commercial value, large number of stakeholders to keep happy (clients / their representatives etc) and pressure to generate business.
What's got you so sneery?

Stressedout10 · 01/05/2019 14:12

I work with the public they are the reason I'm retraining. You can't understand quite how stressful it is being randomly screamed at swarn at is and why because I happened to be the person who answered the call 😣

RedPanda2 · 01/05/2019 14:13

I work for the NHS. My job in itself wouldnt't be as stressful if I had the resources to do it properly.

Zoobedoo · 01/05/2019 14:14

Every job has its stressful moments I guess. Mine's not stressful, not unless a lion escapes or something...

FrederickCreeding · 01/05/2019 14:16

Plenty of jobs are genuinely stressful, particularly those dealing with people, and especially medical jobs where things really can be 'life or death'.

However, I know exactly what you mean op and I can't help thinking that there's a growing trend of using the word "stressful" when people simply mean busy. Plus note the different definitions of busy Wink

NuffSaidSam · 01/05/2019 14:18

I don't think it's that everyone has an objectively stressful job, more that lots of people have a job that makes them feel stressed.

That could be for any number of reasons, long hours, low pay, bullying in the workplace, not enough hours in the day with other commitments, predisposed to feeling stressed, overworked, difficult commute, childcare issues, under qualifed etc. etc.

PurplePiePete · 01/05/2019 14:19

an un-busy un-skilled job can still be stressful given the right line manager / colleagues / business sector / trading conditions

londonloves · 01/05/2019 14:19

I used to be a senior NHS manager. That was fucking stressful. I'm a stay at home mum now and it's fucking brilliant.
My husband is an accountant and he thinks he has a stressful job.

TwelveLeggedWalk · 01/05/2019 14:19

Most people I know have stressful jobs because most employers - whether public or private - are cutting back resources so everyone is being expected to do more with less.

That applies whether you're working for a big multinational and have lost all your support staff or are a teaching assistant.

Jebuschristchocolatebar · 01/05/2019 14:21

Dh has a legal job which is genuinely very stressful at times and very easy at other times. My job involves very fast decision making involving the safety of other people’s money so it can be stressful at times.

KittyInTheCradle · 01/05/2019 14:23

Mines stressful in a large part because the workforce gets reorganised every year or two, so you can not feel comfortable (even though it's a permanent job), you always have to perform to a high level in the knowledge you will likely be re-interviewing for your own job shortly, or your post could be deleted if you're not liked. It's operating as if you're always in a trial period for a new job, for your whole career D:

BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 14:23

I'm a sahm, it's not stressful in the slightest. Mostly because my dc started school in September and it really doesn't take much to keep a two bed terrace and one child running smoothly.

Dp is an industrial chemist and if he or one of the operators (or shaved gorillas as he calls them) fucks up, there is the potential for half the city to be gassed by bromine, which is particularly unpleasant. So that's fairly stressful I'd say. He doesn't even get paid that well for it (sub 25k)

T1nah · 01/05/2019 14:24

However, I know exactly what you mean op and I can't help thinking that there's a growing trend of using the word "stressful" when people simply mean busy

It's like people on MN can't cope with being expected to do a job competently and cope with a busy period or awkward person. It's got to be stressful.

Also resources, at times I have actually worked 3 people's jobs at once, just because I was seen as efficient and couldn't say no due to the above fears
