To expect all of this from a water softener?

  • better skin and hair
  • improvements in my baby's eczema
  • less limescale/soap scum in bathroom and on appliances
  • tastier water
  • easier to clean bathrooms

Or am I being unrealistic? I haven't had one installed yet but I'm hoping it might be the answer to a lot of my first world problems. DH thinks they are expensive and I might be disappointed.
I currently live in a hard water area, but grew up an area with soft water and I still regularly visit my parents there. I do notice the huge difference on the points above every time I'm at my parents house - especially the skin and hair! But DH thinks I'm BU to expect a water softener to replicate the water from my parents house 350 miles north of us!

I have someone coming out to give me a quote so can ask him but he will have his own agenda. So basically wondering if anyone has a softener installed and would you recommend it?

We have one and yes I’d say all the benefits you list are true. Except the tastier water, most people don’t like the flavour of the treated water, we had an extra tap installed with filtered non softened water in the kitchen and that tastes lovely. Hard water just tastes like chlorine!!

That said, your husband is right it is expensive. I wasn’t fussed either way but my husband was keen so he arranged and paid for it out of his bonus. THe company we used did a trial where they installed it and we paid nothing for 3 months - id we wanted they’d have come and taken it away after that if we didn’t want to keep it. However, as they’d drilled a hole for the extra tap in to my lovely quartz work surface, I didn’t feel that was an option Hmm don’t forget to account for the extra expense of the block salt every month too.

We have a water softener and I haven’t notice a lot of benefits to health and skin but our bathroom is pretty much limescale free.

Salt needs to be replenished and my local b&q only seem to stock a couple of bags at time for some reason.

Water isn’t tastier and i believe it isn’t supposed to be used for making baby formula. Like modgepodge, Unsoftened water comes through our kitchen and we filter it with a brita tap and only drink that.

Yes & no

I bought the Harvey’s one after really looking into them. I forget all the details now but it has the best/greatest amount of the stuff that actually softens the water and they are well made. It was £1600, twice the price of many of them, but best quality/value for the money (IMO).

No
More
Limescale

...and to me, for that alone, it’s worth it.

I was SO fed up of the limescale. I couldn’t leave dishes to drain because it marked them all. It left the drainer in a state. The taps always looked a mess. The bathroom was a nightmare.

We live in a VERY hard water area, it’s worse than other relatively local areas. I was really fed up of having to use anti limescale stuff daily.

The kitchen and bathroom are now so easy to clean & stay cleaner.

If it got damaged beyond repair, I’d get another one tomorrow.

I had an issue with it leaking, just a small amount, a few weeks after the guarantee ran out. I called them to see about getting it looked at, the guy came out, saw it was a seal and replaced the entire inner workings. He said it’s very rare for it to happen, and they used to replace the seal, but now they just replace the entire inner bit. No charge at all.

I can’t really say re the taste as everyone is different. But there’s no more ‘film’ on a cup of tea...

However, I’m disappointed that it’s not the same as showering in naturally soft water. It hasn’t made the difference to my hair I was hoping it would (like when I’m up north or in France etc).

Eczema is such a personal thing. It may or may not make a difference to DD, the only good thing is, it won’t make it any worse.

The other stuff they say about saving money on shampoo/dishwashing liquid/laundry detergent/softener...🤷🏻‍♀️ Possibly/probably - but hugely dependent on your own habits & products I think. For example I use liquid tabs, you can’t use half a one. But I do use less of it when I use the wool wash liquid. I didn’t buy it to save money on those things, so I’m not really that observant or bothered.

It takes a couple of weeks to really see the benefit as it’s clearing out the build up in the pipes and takes a bit longer to be fully clear but some difference is noticeable immediately.

As I say, if it got damaged beyond repair (I’m busy having the kitchen renovated, it’s on my mind 🤣) I’d replace it immediately without a second thought.

Harvey’s do a 12 week free trial. You’ve nothing to lose (they change about £50 per month but it’s either refunded when they collect the unit or deducted from the cost. They had to start doing that because people were keeping the units and not paying for them 😳🙄).

The salt use varies depending on how much water you use. It comes in blocks that are easy to put into the unit - I did NOT want one with salt that had to be scooped into the machine. Far too much faff.

I promise I don’t work for them 🤣 but maybe I should...I could definitely rave about them!

I think this War & Peace should have covered everything Blush but feel free to ask if you have any questions!

Remember that babies, young children, people who have to watch their sodium intake shouldn't drink softened water - you usually have one tap that is not connected to the water softener system for drinking water. i haven't got one personally but i have been researching them to possibly get one in the future.

IncrediblySadToo · 01/05/2019 12:08

...

Harvey’s will install a filtered water tap - cute little thing, or you can get a 3 way tap.

I let them install the filter tap as I knew I was ripping the kitchen out anyway, had I had quartz I wouldn’t have, until I was sure I wanted to keep it and then I’d have got the 3 way tap.

Water softer companies suggest the filter tap for baby bottles and people on certain medication. However, it’s an arse covering recommendation because the sodium is still lower than what comes out of most of the regular taps across the country.

Harvey’s deliver the salt blocks. It’s not expensive and if you have some storage you can save money buy buying it in bulk. The prices are on their website.

No one can say how many you’ll need each month because it’s too variable - how many showers, baths, loads of washing etc.

incrediblysadtoo are you my husband?! You have about the same amount of enthusiasm for water softeners as he does! Grin

coffeeforone · 01/05/2019 12:15

Thank you so much for the replies and tips! Very helpful!

Limescale is a big thing for me too! I currently probably spend as much on viakal as I will on the softener salt top ups.
And it would be amazing to say by to the 'film' on a cup of tea!
Harvey is the company I'm getting a quote from so will probably sign up to their free trial.
I didn't realise about the water taste so thanks for the heads up - we do tend to drink a lot straight from the tap so hadn't realised we might need to filter drinking water - DH will probably use it as a counter argument.
However, for some reason I thought they were more expensive than £1600 - I recall someone mentioned £5k in conversation which is what I said to DH we could be looking at...the lower than expected quote may definitely sway him (It will be a joint decision as we have pooled finances). i don't want him to say 'I told you so' when I'm disappointed later. A free trial sounds like a win-win!

You can't drink the water, you really can't! I don't even boil vegetables in it, I have a seperate water tap for drinking and for icecubes in the fridge.

However, it's the best thing we ever did, have had one more than 10 years and still going strong. No limescale! (well... a tiny bit but nothing like before, when I couldn't even see through the shower screen if I didn't clean it regularly)

thenightsky · 01/05/2019 12:39

Everything incrediblysadtoo said. I love my Harveys one. I have a tiny tap in the corner of the utility room sink for un-softened, but we only use that for tea. Softened is fine for everything else such as boiling pasta, veg etc.

I used to waste hours trying to chip limescale off taps, where it hung like stalactites, taking the skin of your knuckles if you caught them. We also had to replace the inner workings of our shower twice when the limescale made it seize up.

IncrediblySadToo · 01/05/2019 12:50

🤣 he sounds like a great guy🤣

IncrediblySadToo · 01/05/2019 13:08

Drinking softened water...

To expect all of this from a water softener?
Passthecake30 · 01/05/2019 13:21

Ours completely sorted the kids excema, and if we ever let the salt run out, we notice on their skins.

Less washing powder is needed, and shampoo lathers up easily. Hair is soft... sometimes too soft to do anything with it!

We use mains water in the kettle but have a filter kettle to avoid the lime scale "skin".

We've had our softener for 10yrs. If it breaks... we would replace in a heart beat.

FrancesFryer · 01/05/2019 13:28

You may be able to drink the softened water but it tastes disgusting

Roussette · 01/05/2019 15:06

Yes, it tastes sort of soapy

NCforthis2019 · 01/05/2019 15:10

We have one - we did so much research before buying it though, mainly for my kids eczema - its helped alot. We also buy the salt wholesale so not that expensive.for me - it was worth it.

Roussette · 01/05/2019 15:44

The salt isn't expensive, I buy it from Amazon.
