I have some sort of virus with a measles-like rash.

It started 13 days ago with what felt like a cold, then progressed to conjunctivitis and laryngitis with a painful, forceful cough.

A while ago (perhaps about six days ago) a rash appeared on my abdomen- it's raised, reddish and looks like the rash that you get with measles, rubella or the secondary rash of human parvovirus (slapped cheek syndrome). The rash has stayed isolated to my abdomen and the top of my legs though and didn't start at my face and progress downwards as it would in classic measles.

Last night my cheeks went bright red and hot (I'm careful about sunscreen and hadn't been outside during the day) so I thought it might be slapped cheek syndrome but they've cleared up today and I'm not sure that conjunctivitis and laryngitis are symptoms of slapped cheek anyway.

I'm not sure of my MMR status as my Mum said that the whole Autism nonsense was in the press when I was due to be vaccinated so she thinks I had separate individual vaccines for some but perhaps not all three components.

I cannot visit the GP but just wondered if anyone had had similar?

Definitely not a medical professional here and in no way do I say that my opinion is right as I have no background in the medical field. The rash on the abdomen only makes me think of shingles/herpes zoster.

I would suggest consulting your GP anyway as this is in no way something that should go untreated specially if you don’t know what it is. Best of luck and hope you get better soon!

Custardforbreakfast · 30/04/2019 15:08

Just read the last bit that you can’t visit your GP, is there any other medical professional you could possibly see?

lilabet2 · 30/04/2019 17:49

Thanks Custard. It's not shingles because the rash is different (I've had shingles before) but it doesn't look like classic measles either.

I think I'm starting to feel better now but just unsure what it is/was really!

I quarantined myself as the rash is very Rubella/Measles-like anyway. The GP probably couldn't do much and I wouldn't want to spread it!

Why couldn't you visit a GP?

lilabet2 · 30/04/2019 20:00

Hi Famalamaringwrong,

Just because of another issue I have. I'm not too worried about it anyway and have kept myself away from other people to prevent spreading it.

Could it be "Slapped Cheek" the only thing I am not sure of is if the rash would appear elsewhere than the cheeks.

It could also just be a generalised rash because of body temp etc

GookledyGobb · 30/04/2019 20:03

Couldn’t be strep throat followed by guttate psoriasis? Guttate starts as a bumpy rash not dislike to chickenpox before developing into more psoriasis like patches

Famalamaringwrong · 30/04/2019 21:14

Ok.... random. It could literally be ANYTHING. Hope its goes on it's own I guess.

StealthPolarBear · 30/04/2019 21:21

Scarlet fever?

LaBelleSauvage · 30/04/2019 21:36

Call 111

lilabet2 · 30/04/2019 21:43

Yes sorry Famala- just embarrassing to discuss really.

Hi RB68, Yes I think it might be 'Slapped Cheek' or possibly Rubella- both cause a measles like rash on the torso and a cold-flu like illness.

I don't think it's scarlet fever because other family members have had the conjuncitivitis and laryngitis without a rash and I haven't had any strep bacteria blebs on my tonsils or a high temp/fever.

It could be guttate psoriasis after another fluey bug I guess- I'd never heard of it until now- thanks GookledGobb.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 30/04/2019 21:53

Blebs on the tonsils?

That's an awesome word.

Scarlett fever rash is like sandpaper, rough. And the rash appears in the mouth as well.
Or it did with my kids anyway.

My kids had slapped cheek this time last year (I remember because I was newly pregnant) and it doesn't just stay on the cheeks.
Do you have a pic of the rash on your torso?

jackio2205 · 30/04/2019 22:06

I'd call 111 and they can do a facetime/skype thing, but just as a point, you shouldnt feel health issues are an embarrassment, everyone has one thing or another, just get yourself better x

lilabet2 · 30/04/2019 23:19

Haha yeah sorry- by 'blebs' I mean 'pus spots' as Scarlet Fever is caused by the same Strep bacteria that causes bacterial tonsillitis so you often get blebs. My brother had scarlet fever when he was young and was quite ill with it. I'm almost completely sure it's not scarlet fever because I don't have a temperature, red tongue, chills etc.

I think it is Slapped Cheek as both my cheeks are very bright red and warm again this evening. The rash on my abdomen, chest (only just realised it was there today too!) and top of legs seems to be fading though so things are happening in an unusual order! I also don't really understand why I had Laryngitis and Conjunctivitis with it though (which are more common with Rubella/Measles) but I guess it doesn't matter too much if I'm starting to recover!

Did you catch Slapped Cheek or were you given Immunoglobulin?

OP posts:
lilabet2 · 30/04/2019 23:24

Thanks Jackio- it's been an odd virus really. I will call 111 if things get any worse but I'm not too concerned for now.

Thanks for the reassurance too! I did have to go to the GP for a cancer scare last year but have major difficulty going so only go if something seems very serious.
