To be upset about people mimicking my accent behind my back

I heard someone talking about me today in the canteen and they didn't know I was there and could hear. They were talking about me and putting on my accent.

For some reason it really annoyed me. Am I just being too sensitive?

Thanks everyone - reading all the posts makes me understand it's not me that's wrong to be upset and I've had a couple glasses of wine and chilling out (said in a Northern accent!).

Really appreciate everyone posting.

One of my best friends is from Sheffield and together we'd always do an impression of his accent. Particularly saying some of our favourite words that he uses (such as breadcake) which we find utterly amazing. Together, with BF, it's a fun past time in which he puts on an even stronger accent and we argue about what certain food items should be called. He can give as good as he gets with our accents too.
I would never do it behind his back. That is just downright nasty. Yanbu at all.

Yep it's disrespectful and rude.

If you are upset by it, then TELL them.

I am happy to be corrected but I THINK it's probably against the law to mock peoples accent. As a pp said, if you were Asian, it would not be accepted.

YANBU that's awful OP and I would be sad about it too Thanks

When I say against the law, I mean, like something you could face a disciplinary for at work. Didn't word it well sorry.

But it's certainly not a good thing to do!

God yanbu. I get this all the time. In fairness, I am from Salford and I do sound like Frank Gallagher from shameless BUT it’s so annoying.

Someone asked me to say ‘sunshine’ like Liam Gallagher recently, he’s not even from Salford 🤷🏻‍♀️

I get mocked all the time. I have a thick Brummie accent Blush but idgas, it's where I'm from, it's me. I hate it just as much as everyone else does lol, but.... yow cor let it bova ya, Bab. Flowers

My husband's younger cousins always repeat me in 'my' accent Angry they think its hilarious and the adults all smile and chuckle and roll their eyes like ' oh what are they like'.

I think it's rude and I just stop talking and stare at them but no one even realises that it's rude so don't even link the mocking to my stopping talking! If I heard my children mocking someone else's accent I wouldn't be letting it continue.

But anyway, you're not being unreasonable, I don't like it and it doesn't feel nice. But it does at least highlight them for who they are.
