To be so worried/nervous? Re HCA Job application

I went back to uni and am graduating this year. I didn’t do nursing but something sort of healthcare related.

I have applied to work as a HCA. With the career path I want to take, it seems like the next logical step. But I’m so worried I won’t get it, or even get an interview. I really need this job as I have no way of paying my rent from next month onwards and it would be amazing experience for what I want to do with my future career.

I’m also worried that one of my most relevant references won’t respond and give me a reference as they’re very flaky and just not on the ball.

I’m just sick to my stomach that I won’t get any of the HCA jobs I’ve applied to. Someone please knock some sense into me

If you have empathy and can keep calm in situation's where you may face and emergency or say being hit etc you will be fine .I have worked in care for 25yrs and i will always tell people to expect anything then you won't be shocked .It can also be long and sociable hrs but incredibly rewarding. You need to want to do the job rather than just being a way of paying bills otherwise you will struggle. It is a job i love i wouldn't do anything else i am never going to get rich Grin as it is not the highest paying job as it is very undervalued .Good luck with your interviews .

Should say unsociable hrs 🙈.

Can you join NHSP in the meantime?

Steph8181 · 29/04/2019 20:09

I've looked at NHSP but I think you have to already be a registered NHS professional to do this? Please correct me if I'm wrong Smile

I think you will be fine, it seems like there is never enough staff these days and HCAs are gems.

Be enthusiastic, demonstrate that you actually care about people, and show that you're prepared for what the job entails. When I was last working in the sector it was amazing how many people came for these jobs without bothering to find out who they'd be supporting (eg what type of ward they were expected to work and age range/health needs of those admitted) , or people who would have quite derogatory views about people with mental health issues, or people who assumed they wouldn't have to do any of the 'difficult' stuff (late shifts, or dealing with violence/restraints)
A bit of compassion, grit, common sense and enthusiasm for the job goes a very long way in these roles. Good luck!

You definitely done need to be a registered HCA to join NHSP.
