DS1 has various complex disabilities after being born 16 weeks prematurely. He is quite severely autistic, although verbal, and attends a special school where he's a weekly boarder. He's 13 years old.

I've just waved him off in his taxi for his week at school. He was half way out of the door when he muttered to me "Bye, I love you!" I am speechless and a little bit tearful.....he finds it so hard to articulate his feelings that he has never, ever said that before.

DS1 loves me! I never knew how special those words would be to finally hear! Smile Glitterball Star

So happy for you catkin Smile It's funny isn't it, we know they love us but hearing it from them... especially a 13 year old!

My DC has SN and I remember the consultant saying to us (their exact words, and now I think wtf) "you have to understand you will never hear him say "I love you".

Well we did hear it and now we say it every night (well I do, DC is a teenager too now and sometimes just just makes mmmmf noises and looks at the Xbox Grin)

halfbloodprincess Flowers you will get there, I promise. It’s a different life to what we expected, but we try to look at the positives and our boy is funny, staggeringly honest (in a way so many of us would love to be but would never dare) and just makes us see things in a different, and often much richer, way.

moonkissed how lovely that you got those three little words too, and continue to get them. Yes we get “mmmmfffff” from behind the Xbox too! Grin

Thank you all for joining in with my Mexican wave....I may start a conga in a minute if there’s enough of us!

I’ve survived avengers endgame, the billy McNeill tribute at Saturdays Celtic game and the big game of thrones battle without a tear but this has made me cry where try all failed, so lovely op, you are doing an amazing job.

AudacityOfHope · 29/04/2019 13:09

I'm in the conga. That's the nicest thing I've read on Mumsnet ever. 🤩😍

BoswellsBollocks · 29/04/2019 13:15

Ah Jesus, now I’m crying just before I’ve got to go back to work!

NoClueWithStyle · 29/04/2019 13:16

What a fantastic, uplifting start to your week.
I also hope it's the first of many "I love you" s said by your Ds.

Can I just check...the Conga...are you leading with your right or left foot,
? I always get it wrong but feel this special occasion warrants getting it right.

CatkinToadflax · 29/04/2019 13:21

I should add here that DDog is looking at me with bafflement because DS1 has told her many many times that he loves her (she is his unofficial autism dog and is a constant support to him). So DDog doesn’t quite understand all the fuss or why I’m bouncing around with such elatement (which probably wasn’t a word but it is now). Hopefully he can now branch out to verbal affection with other humans as well as me! I’m so proud of him.

That is just the best 3 words he will ever say to you. This has made me cry. You sound like a fantastic Mum.
