DD has asked for one for her birthday. Personally been dreading this stage as I think they aren't great value, but she has her heart set on one. Without spending a fortune which would you recommend? There seem to be soo many options it's really confusing me. Thanks

I know the feeling! I tried to avoid the things too but have been dragged into them. From experience the little sisters ones seem to be often the best priced - these things are ridiculously expensive. The little pet ones are the least offensive but they don't hit the mark of being the doll type ones in our house any more. You can't pick the ones you get - it's all pot luck so be prepared for wanting to 'complete the series'
Amazon and Tesco often do deals so keep an eye. Hopefully it will be a short lived phase!!

We are experts Grin

I would start with either a bling (£11) or one of the little sister (£6) in order to see if she likes them first.

From there you can get hairgoals (£16.99) and fuzzy pets (£13.99)

The only problem is doubles, which is why I’m on several LOL groups on fb in order to do swaps.

Also with the hairgoals, there are two that don’t come with hair so some children are gutted when they are opened to find they don’t have hair.

If you want to go for any of the shells which range from £30 right up to £80, just remember it’s the same doll in one colour. So don’t buy 3 of the shell in pink thinking there might be different dolls. There are however different dolls in different colours, so one doll in the pink shell and one in the teal.

Any questions just give me a shout

Oh also avoid any big lol surprise £60 rip off specials. One of the girls from school had one and it was rubbish. You are far better off getting a couple of the smaller £9 balls in the series (which have a doll and a couple of accessories etc inside to open ) than one big expensive thing

Soubriquet · 28/04/2019 11:17

We have the bigger surprise (£60). My dd got it for Christmas

It’s definitely something only an LOL enthusiast should get.

It comes with 2 dolls and a pet, but also several wigs and other accessories. Is it worth £60? No not really, but does it put the biggest smile on your children’s face? Yes it does.

Also with the colour change, you don’t have to get them wet. You can stick them in the freezer for 5 mins and they should change. If it doesn’t, pop it on a radiator as it may be a hot change.

If it doesn’t do any of the above, it’s not a colour change.

The little sister dolls are cheaper but one of the accessories is for a big sister doll so no use if you don't have any.

Personally I'd go for a normal big sister doll for about £10 for a first doll, they have more accessories and it means they will get the full experience of opening the different layers, which is what it is all about really. The confetti dolls would work well too. The pets are nice, but I think if someone is asking for an lol they probably want a proper doll.

The undercover dolls are the most popular in our house, but they are a bit more complicated as you have to put in codes to open the different compartments. So assuming your dc is younger, I probably wouldn't go for them.

Stompythedinosaur · 28/04/2019 11:21

Also, don't buy cheap lols from eBay, they are fakes.

MsMarvellous · 28/04/2019 11:22

I have to say I felt the same as you but actually my daughter plays with them loads and for hours. I agree with the idea of getting a bigger doll to start.

Soubriquet · 28/04/2019 11:24

I actually have my own private collection Blush

I’ve almost completed the hairgoals series. Just need 2 more dolls which I’m going to buy direct from the fb page so I don’t get a double

nannyplummyarse · 28/04/2019 11:25

My daughters 4 and infatuated with them. She's had the big surprises and everything. She plays with them more than her other toys. I'd just get the big sister ball and see if your daughter likes them first.
I do think the appeal comes from open all the little sections and compartments it's very exciting lol.

LipstickTaserrr · 28/04/2019 11:36

How old is your DD? I personally don't think the little sisters are good value for money. I'd start with a big ball I think bling series are the current ones or the undercover as mentioned by a PP as the codes to open each section make the excitement last a bit longer.
I hated them at first lots of plastic tat but my DD will sit for ages with a tub of water and her dolls, colour change or not they all go swimming Smile

Emergencycake · 28/04/2019 11:38

Thanks all, I will definitely try Tesco first. I went round asda the other day and there were so many LOL items I was getting really confused. Glad to be more enlightened Smile
