Has anyone ever downgraded their phone?

I’m thinking about downgrading my mobile back to a non-smart version because I seem to be seriously addicted to the bloody thing. I’ve been checking out the amount of time I spend on it and it’s quite amazing. Whenever I can’t find it I go into a panic, I don’t feel complete unless I’m clutching it. It’s the first thing I reach for in the morning and the last thing I hear (plugged into my air pods) at night. I haven’t read a book for years. I have books on the kindle on my phone but can’t concentrate on them because I’m always being distracted by something else.

I think I’ll survive (!) old school without it - using the laptop as required - and I’m really curious to remind myself of what life was like before I ever had one. Downsides are not having immediate access to maps/ traffic updates, train times and Uber on the rare occasions that I need it. Upsides are (I’m hoping) better concentration, less anxiety and remembering what it’s like not to have to be “connected” all the time.

Anyone else here done it? Thinking about doing it? How did it go?

It’s so weird the way my hand always seems to be reaching for it even when my brain doesn’t quite know what it wants to look up is the same for me too. It's a terrible, lazy habit.
Me too. But I think it's a subconscious desire for a dopamine hit. I know I even have enough of myself when I realise I'm just switching between MN, FB, emails, and repeat, repeat, repeat. "Stop!", I tell myself! and then block it all with ColdTurkey. And that's on my laptop, not even a phone. It's insane really and I see my teens doing the same but they won't listen to me.

I usually have MN and Facebook blocked on my phone to minimise how much I use it whilst still maintaining the useful smart features. I deleted the apps off my phone but it didn't stop me as I just went to the websites instead. Pathetic.

Yes yes yes! I've been thinking to do the exact same thing - am going to check out the Nokia 8810, and those suggested apps as well. Thanks for starting this thread OP- I have found my people! Grin

I've never upgraded from my basic nokia! I must be the only person I know in their forties.
In the evening I have my laptop and i'm actually quite addicted to that,so I don't know how i'd cope if I had a good phone, going off all day.
I can only txt and call on my phone but I love it

I recommend this book How to Break Up With Your Phone: The 30-Day Plan to Take Back Your Life www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1409182908/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JmIXCbZJYKPVJ?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

Kerkyra i envy you - mine put in years of hard service but it all ended when i ran it over. Sad a sad end for a little warrior of a phone.
