To be annoyed by the number of cars my neighbour has?

I know I am being unreasonable (which is why I'm having a moan on here instead of to someone I know) but they have two big 4x4s, a sporty thing, a motorbike and a van between two adults and it just seems so unnecessary and wasteful particularly with the state the environments in at the moment.

Presumably the van is a works vehicle. They can only drive two of them at once and if they're usung notorbikes rather than the 4x4 for shorter or solo journeys they're pilluting less than driving the 4x4s everywhere.

Every Friday night outside my neighbours they have 3 family cars, 2 small cars and a works van. They're a family of 4 with the daughters being adults and at the weekend the daughters boyfriends stay. It gets right on my wick when I have to ask them to move so I can get in or out of my driveway.

I live in a street where each house has one designated space with a few extra spaces. The houses were built 50 or more years ago and these days people often have more than one vehicle per household so it’s so frustrating. We have two cars, our neighbour has one but a lady over the road (she lives on her own) has two cars herself (work and leisure), her son has a car and he boyfriend who stays has one too. There sometimes a mo-ped too. Now normally I wouldn’t be bothered but we had a fall out a few years ago because of our ‘two vehicles’ parking but now she has 3-4 and we sometimes can’t park so she’s a hypocrite.

Our neighbors used to have two extended wheelbase transit vans, a big 4x4, two smaller cars and two quad bikes. Four adults lived there (a woman in her late 20s, her parents and her husband - the daughter, son-in-law and father ran a business together involving the vans). It was bloody annoying because they have a two car drive which they never used because they had it set up as an exercise area for their chihuahua Hmm and they have a garage - which they kept the quad bikes in. So they parked 5 vehicles on the road, and the vans impeded my view to get my car off my drive. Nobody really parks on our road except visitors as everyone has drives, but they parked each side of our drive, leaving just enough room to get out but obstructing the line of sight.

Thankfully the daughter and her husband moved out a year or so taking a van and two cars so it's a lot better.

Bloody annoying at the time though.

Just been out and bought a new car today. That will make four cars and two motorbikes between H and I. One of the cars will be donated to a family member in a month or so.

We have space for them, and as we can each only be in/on one mode of transport at a time, there are never more than 2 being used so no environmental impact beyond beinga 2 car family.

MoreSlidingDoors · 27/04/2019 19:03

We have a double garage and off road space big enough for all of them though, unlike most of our neighbours.

Cocobeanstalk · 27/04/2019 19:03

We live down a close. Each house has 1 parking space then say 5 shared visitor spaces. 3 houses have 2 cars. One neighbour has 4 cars Hmm battered van (not moved in weeks) car they use daily, car which isn’t road legal(never moved) disability car which has never moved. It’s just rude.

FunkyKingston · 27/04/2019 19:08

Uf you're annoyed that they're making access to and from your drive difficult or impossible then fair enough, but environmental damage is a bit of a red herring.

ravensrivers · 27/04/2019 19:11

Thankfully they've got a garage and quite a big drive way so the only thing that gets parked on the road is the van and they're all well kept so not an eyesore but only the van and one of the 4x4s get used during the week.
The other 4x4 only usually gets used at weekends and the sporty thing and the motorbike only come out the garage maybe once a month and only when the weather is nice.
It just seems wasteful to have them just for the sake of having them.

Perhaps they use them for different things and enjoy driving. I see driving as a chore and will go out of my way to avoid it, but some people enjoy it and want different cars for different journeys or types of driving whereas I see a car as a utilitarian object, not too bothered what it looks like so long as it is cheap and reliable. Most of us own more things than it is strictly necessary to have, for me it is shoes, fountain pens and bicycles.

MoreSlidingDoors · 27/04/2019 19:28

I can’t use a motorbike for work. My sporty car does about 16 miles to the gallon (do not suitable for my commute) and as I work remotely I need to carry all of my work gear with me (4x4). DH needs a runaround because he does the majority of school runs and works from home most of the time. He also can’t use a motorbike for that.

kalopali · 27/04/2019 19:32

Some of us enjoy cars and driving and own more than there are days in the week. As they’re not inconveniencing you I suggest you keep your nose out. The environmental nonsense is just that, I can only drive one at a time!

I have loads of cars but always park them off road because I can. The numbers of vehicles I have will impact on no one.

mysteryfairy · 27/04/2019 20:29

We have 4 cars and 3 drivers in our household. They certainly aren’t obstructive to neighbours but I don’t delude myself that it’s no environmental impact that we have too many cars. Energy and materials were used to make them after all!

MoreSlidingDoors · 27/04/2019 20:40

We keep our cars on average for 18 years (from new till dead, basically). Significantly less impact than those that change every 3 years or so, isn’t it?

pinkgloves · 28/04/2019 14:13

I had someone make a snippy comment about dh and I having 'too many vehicles' the other day.

I have my car, dh has two cars because one won't work in the summer (overheats) and the other won't work in the winter (no heat). Grin

We have another car which dh is working on so we can get rid of the two part time cars.

We also have two tractors but they're needed for land stuff and work.

If it's not inconveniencing you I can't see why it annoys you (or my nosy neighbour.)

freetone · 28/04/2019 14:35

If they’re not encroaching on your parking space and it’s a public road then it shouldn’t really affect you. I wish I had such a simple life I had time to be annoyed about the number of vehicles someone else has!
