To feel revolted when neighbours' cats crap in my back yard?

We have a small back yard with several pot plants. We have a lovely table & chairs so that we can eat outside when the weather is good. We have two young children who like to get out and explore (and get their hands into everything).

It's disgusting that I should have to clear up buckets of cat poo each time I consider sitting outside or letting the children out. It stinks beyond belief and I am not letting the kids get anywhere near it.

What can I do to stop the cats coming in? I think it's obscene that cat owners think their neighbours should clear up their pet's crap before they can enjoy their own gardens. We've got one of those ultrasonic scarer things which doesn't seem to keep them away. What else is safe for kids and not too hideous?

Nothing against cats, just those that mess in my garden.

How to control your cat?

just like this.

Take it for a walk like you would a dog. If the cat poops, you scoop. Nice and tidy. No more random turding anywhere

What about indoor exercise, I hear you ask? Got that one covered too

Now you know there are quality products out there for cat control, there is no excuse really

Sixofone · 17/07/2007 19:31

Almost forgot, there is an informative article here on toilet training cats.

Or, as the post says, how to civilise your pussy.

Sixofone · 17/07/2007 19:32

And yes, I have lots of better things to do, but none of them are quite as fun as getting a rise out of a cat owner

oxocube · 17/07/2007 19:43

Well I have had cats all my life and I do appreciate that cat poo is horrible - I hate it in my own garden - but I think poisoning a cat, either yourself or allowing your partner to do it is outrageous. My cats, and I currently have 3, one old 16 year old and 2 8 week kittens, use a litter tray which I empty twice a day. I remember clearly one of my lovely cats who was poisoned, by rat poison I think, when I lived in the country and the owner of the barn next door put down poison and didn't tell me. My cat died in agony - it took about 12 hours, from him looking unwell in the early evening, to a painful death with convulsions, vomitting etc. So just in case anyone is thinking of it, PLEASE think again, despite how pissed off you get. Try talking to the owners if you can or at least resorting to humane deterrents like water or pepper

I've just got the cats in and I'm going to give them a good talking to. I'm going to tell them not to crap in anyone else's garden and see how I get on. I'm going to tell them that they must learn to appreciate the neighbours' feelings and report back to me where the offending crap is so I can go clear it up.

The other neighbour has a cat so I'm going to have to inspect it's crap to see if I can differentiate between his and my cats. I'm jolly well not clearing up cat crap that doesn't orignate from mine.

The rabbit thing seems to work. When next door got one that's as big as my cats they won't go in their garden any more.

Sixofone - no reply to the email

LieselVentouse · 17/07/2007 21:39

Alternatively just boot them in the balls

themoon66 · 18/07/2007 10:32

Cats can be controlled. My friend has three lovely cats and they have a big avery type run out in her garden. She takes them for walks on leads too.

cazzybabs · 18/07/2007 10:42

What about fox poo in your garden - shall I go and get a fox hound to kill that. Or other aniaml poo - I find bird poo on my car pretty annoying too!

We have cats and if you can tell me how to get them to poo in my garden then I will do it.

I fidn the idea of shooting and posioning cats horrid - even before we had cats we didn't mind other people's pooing in our garden. They do it in the flower bed - I tell my children not to go near the flower beds. And to wash their hands when they have been digging in the soil. Unforntaly or not cats are allowed to wonder freely into other people's gardens (and poo in them). And you are not allowed to shoot or posion cats - you would get prosucuted by the RSPCA. And your toddler is welcome to poo in my toilet anytime - I mean we was humans use toilets to poo in, cats use flower beds!

DrNortherner · 18/07/2007 13:10

An avery trype run is not natural for most cats. Most would hate it.

geekgirl · 18/07/2007 14:09

just imagine how the rodent population would rocket if we all treated cats like hamsters or whatever and kept them in big cages....

most normal cats would go insane in an avery-style enclosure

alicet · 18/07/2007 14:27

Have only read op so sorry if this is repetitive....

Sympathise with your situation but because cats are very independent and nimble it is virtually impossible to stop them from going wherever they like.

I used to put a spray called Cat-a-pelt on my pot plants and that stopped them. Don't know if it's safe for kids or not. I got it from our local garden centre a few years ago.

Another thing that works and doesn't hurt the cats is to spray them with a water pistol whenever you see them in your garden. They hate this and hopefully it will discourage them from coming back

Good luck!

Apparently there's a website called deteracat or sommat, that sells products to keep cats out of gardens.
Apparently, if you get the gentleman of the house to widdle in the garden, this will keep them away, too!
