to ask for an indication of salary at this stage?

I am desperately unhappy in my job. Therefore, I am job hunting, and I attended an interview for what sounds like an interesting and dare I say it, fun job. It's for a small company and apparently a lot of people applied for it. There's just one problem - I have no idea what the salary is. The job said 'dependent on experience', which means nothing.

I have been invited to a second interview, and they want a 20 minute presentation, a written task assessment, and a mini project submitted. AIBU to ask them for an indication of the salary at this stage? While I would love this job, I don't think I can survive if it pays under £18k or so. But on the other side, I worry asking will put them off hiring me Confused

Did they ask your current salary when you spoke with them? Generally if your current salary is within range then they'll pursue the interview, if not, then they should have indicated you weren't in range.

No they haven't asked

I would definitely contact them and ask the salary range - it's the least they can, and it doesn't need to be any more accurate than, say, a £10k range. But to ask a candidate go to all that further effort of putting together a presentation, assessment and project without knowing the salary ballpark is quite rude, I think.

It depends on industry. Where I used to work you would never ask but if you were offered the job your current compensation would definitely be matched and usually increased.
