Sorry to hijack AIBU, I'm desperate for an answer. I've booked two appointments to have the skin on my cheeks checked out by the doctor over the past 6 months, but each and every appointment, (sod's law) it calms down and looks better so Dr can't assess/help.

It's been worse for two weeks' now but I'm loathed to waste more Dr time if it inevitably gets better by the time I'm seen.

Sometimes it can be clearer for a few days, then I'll wake up and my cheeks are stained red and buldgy, like lumpy skin. It's a tiny bit itchy sometimes. Spots don't come to a 'head'. They're just large and lumpy.

I've tried cutting dairy, sugar, wheat, booze, fruit, etc etc, I've taken anti-histamines, I cleanse, moisturise with expensive sensitive creams...I stopped wearing any make up and I take cool showers, and limit having the central heating on. But I don't know what is causing it! It's been like this for a year or so, getting worse each 'flare up'. No link or pattern to menstrual cycle.

Does anyone recognise what it may be?
-normal flare up?
-hormonal acne?
-roseacea?
-allergies?

ANY help appreciated!

It looks like me when my rosacea was bad. I took antibiotics and luckily it hasn’t come back to the same extent. It does flare up a bit for me if I’m in the sun/wind too much or if I drink too much, but on the whole has been loads better since.

Dh had similar on his scalp and is on tetracycline for months now, but is down to one tablet maybe every third day. It just started about a year and half ago out of the blue.

The Ordinary products are easily available online and very reasonably priced.

loverofpants · 26/04/2019 16:45

It looks like mine which rosacea. Different people find different things work unfortunately and doctors seem to be very hit and miss in their knowledge, you need a dermatologist if possible. A lot of people use soolantra which is a cream and you can order online if you can't get a prescription. Also I use the child's farm moisturizer from boots (for babies with eczema, has a little duckling on the front) which mine doesn't react to. I also respond well to general products from dermalogica, which I know can get expensive but I'd already spent a fortune on products only to throw them out after a few uses as they were a trigger. I've recently had a few Pico Genesis laser treatments which are crazy expensive but I've actually seen a huge improvement and I've battled with my face for 15 years and would just love one day of not having to wear make up.

Thanks so much (again) for the real-life help, I'm going to research and try to find a dermatologist to finally sort it out. The first thing I do now when I wake up is dread looking in the mirror to see how bad it's got!

It's just getting worse with each flare up.

Good luck!

IMVHO a good, understanding dermatologist with a real interest in spots (acne, rosacea...) is worth her (they are usually female) weight in gold. You save so much money on cosmetics once your dermatologist has sorted you out!

Blueberryblueberry · 26/04/2019 16:57

It looks like rosacea- I took a photo to the gp as it wasn't that bad when I actually got an appointment. I explained that it really flares up and showed the Dr a picture. Antibiotics have really helped.

DontLook · 26/04/2019 16:59

@MariaNovella all your help is very much appreciated!

@Blueberryblueberry another vote for anti-biotics...I'm going to have to accept it!

I get skin like that when I'm first in the sun each sitting. Get it a few times and then skin 'toughens up' and reacts less. Called pmle.

Just a curve ball but tbh rosacea seems more likely!

DocMarteens · 26/04/2019 17:01

AlumierMD products such as sensicalm cleanser and calm R serum are good for rosacea symptoms

youarenotkiddingme · 26/04/2019 17:04

Also take pictures to GP to show what it's like inbetween better days.

CatsMother66 · 26/04/2019 17:04

Did you notice your skin more greasy before your skin became this way?

MissUGirl · 26/04/2019 17:05

I had laser and IPL treatment for rosacea and both worked very well. They told me I would probably need to repeat the treatment at some point but it's been around 7/8 years now...

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 26/04/2019 17:12

Woman at work had laser treatment (she's got pots of cash lol) and she's not pint at all now cow

My skin is as dry as a bone.

MariaNovella · 26/04/2019 17:15

Laser treatment for rosacea may be a solution, but best to try antibiotics and topical antibacterial and antiparasite creams first - cheaper by far.

CatsMother66 · 26/04/2019 17:15

Please also google skin mites and read up about it. I asked if your skin became greasy because when I became pregnant my skin was very greasy and I erupted in sore itchy boils which lasted ten years! I joined a Facebook group “Rosacea in English” this gives loads of photo examples and experiences of various treatments. However, someone mentioned skin mites and recommended a product. Thinking I had nothing to loose and absolutely desperate, I ordered it and it worked for me. After 10years of having bad skin, my skin cleared up and has been lovely for the past 2 years. The product is ZZ cream, google it.

justasking111 · 26/04/2019 17:54

My friend had this after first pregnancy. Her dentist of all people told her what it was and recommended antibiotics which cleared them up
