to think I should get rid of my evil woodburner and ask what to replace it with?

Just got in from work and the house is freezing, which after the glorious Easter weekend is making me think unseasonal thoughts about heating currently I've gone to hide under a large duvet in solidarity with the climate change activists.
Obviously reading my mind, the radio chooses this point to inform me that 'when your wood burning stove is lit it's equivalent to having a 7.5 tonne diesel truck idling right outside your house'.
I loathe our woodburner, though it looks glorious when lit I never light it because it stinks (even more than it should do!) and makes me feel ill. So when I chuck it out, what should I do with the unsightly hole in the lounge?
Do you all still love woodburners, or can any helpful MNetters suggest a (preferably not astronomically expensive) more eco- and lung-friendly alternative??

I live in a barn and have oil central heating and no gas. I hate my stove with a passion and have a lung disorder. We've decided to mothball it and get an electric fire.

My previous house had an open fire, it didn't produce much heat. I had a wood burner installed & the difference was amazing, loads of heat !. I lived in an area with no gas & fires were allowed.
We supplemented with homemade paper blocks & free wood, so our bills were minimal.
FYI some electricity suppliers offer 100% green electricity like Bulb Energy & I think Scottish Power from wind, solar & hydro sources

Ours is new and is clean burn. Having had woodburners for 40 years in different houses, it is very important that you burn dried, seasoned wood. Also, get it up to heat before you turn it down.

We replaced a wood stove with a pellet stove. It's fantastic. No smell, no smoke, no dust. I don't know how common they are in the UK though. We are in rural France and it's our main heating source.

Not all wood burners and their fuels are equal.
They are not banning them all just the most polluting ones.
If you have one that burns efficiency and effectively and you use properly dried sustainable fuel then they are not a bad choice.
Old one with a bad draw and dirty flue - get rid.

I know burning green wood decreases the BTU`s of the fire so not a smart move.

i wouldn't park a truck their either especially as their pumping out tons of smoke/shit from their exhaust/funnel Grin

I have a biofuel fire and it's great - cheap to install and run, gives off lots of heat, no pollutants - you don't even have to have a flue.
