to ask if anyone has managed to significantly increase milk supply...

... after 6 months of breastfeeding mainly on one side? My right boob now only produces the tiniest amounts of milk as DS has boob preference. I should've persevered but didn't.

Is it too late to significantly increase my supply?

I have an electric medala pump if that helps!

I would think if you keep feeding on the side she prefers and use your pump on the other side every few hours for a few days that should get you going. Mimic new born feeding.

WeirdPatient · 26/04/2019 11:19

Are you drinking enough water?

breastfeedingishard · 26/04/2019 11:20

Thanks @ooopsupsideyourhead

@WeirdPatient in all honesty? Probably not. Does that make a big difference?

Yes, it did for me!

breastfeedingishard · 26/04/2019 11:22

I can get 100ml from my left boob

Lucky to get 10 from my right. Ugh!

Quite a lot of women get more from one than the other, it can be normal. But, worth trying to increase amount by pumping regularly (I’m assuming you need to pump to build a stash?) and yes, drinking more water can help!

Ohyesiam · 26/04/2019 11:25

Yes! I used goats rue herb fromNrals Yard., it works like a charm! Suddenly I had enough milk for my poorly baby, it was wonderful.

MRex · 26/04/2019 11:25

Always start on the weak boob, drink lots of water and eat tasty oats like granola. Give the weak boob a night feed (2am - 5am) if you can and give it extra pumping time too, that should get it going.

Do you know why DS had that preference, was it boob shape or milk flow? If it's the former, squeezing it into a better shape while he feeds might help, the latter should sort out with time.

Fenugreek!! And pump pump pump!!!

StarDanced · 26/04/2019 20:40

A midwife told me oats helped. I started eating porridge and it massively boosted my supply- might be worth a try.

ScreamScreamIceCream · 26/04/2019 20:50

My daughter randomly swaps her boob preference and the PPs tricks of pumping more and putting the baby on the other boob, plus drinking more water have helped me produce more milk on the non-preferred boob.

Oh and oddly I find I have always produced more with a manual pump. I have an electric Medela pump and a manual Medela pump.

tinysnickersaremyfavourite · 26/04/2019 20:58

It might not matter that much. It is possible to exclusively bfeed twins and they effectively get one boob each.
My Dd fed for 18 months off one side only. She just decided one day that she would only feed off favourite boob from then on.

Saracen · 27/04/2019 00:21

Is it a problem for you? You can certainly make enough milk for your baby with just the one breast, so if everything is going fine then I wouldn't bother doing anything about it.

Fenugreek capsules really worked for me but unfortunately they worked on both boobs, so the more productive one got engorged and then got mastitis! Very annoying.

Ayemama · 27/04/2019 00:29

Oats and green veg help a lot also definitely drink plenty of water and try not to stress and stress causes milk to go down.
Are you pumping while feeding from the other side?
Also random but best time for me to express was after a shower or bath or in a hot room.
Fenegreek can help but can upset babies tummy or Raspberry leave tea if you have any left over from Pregnancy can help
Boost milk supply.
Could you try expressing by hand invbetween pump sessions to try trick you body into thinking you’re feeding more often.
Good luck xx

I could only produce milk from one side, it wasn't a problem, I BF for a year like that. At one stage I could get 10 - 12 oz out of that side first thing in the morning, pity DD wouldn't take a bottle! Hmm

Anyway, drinking lots of water and calcium/magnesium supplements from the health food shop boosted my supply. I also had to up the fat content of my food intake, but you might not need to do that.
