To wonder where my coil has gone?

Name changed for this because I've spoken to people irl about it but had no joy.
I've been for a coil removal today.
The nurse couldn't find the string or even see the coil.
I've to have an internal scan at a clinic (in the next big town) to find it and then hopefully have it removed. I don't want to ask doctor google because I'm already worried it's embedded itself (I don't even know if that's possible!)
I'd love some reassurance please. Has anyone had this done? What can I expect?
The only appt they had was at three pm so I have to sort out childcare too. Confused

Well it might have fallen out or gotten embedded, but most likely it's the time of the month, your cervix gets higher at certain times which can make it harder to find the strings if they're cut short.
Wouldn't worry too much but don't have sex until they do the scan

Treesthemovie · 26/04/2019 10:51

Are you close to period or ovulation time? If closer to ovulation the strings might be shorter

ItsInThereSomewhere · 26/04/2019 10:53

I haven't ever heard of that. I don't know if I'm close to ovulation because I don't have periods (and I don't really know anything about my cycle 🤦‍♀️)

Also getting pregnant is almost impossible now so the worry isn't about that.
Thanks for the replies.

Ah ok - I am thinking of the copper coil.

CheshireChat · 26/04/2019 10:59

Uhmm, OP... Your NC has rather failed Wink

ItsInThereSomewhere · 26/04/2019 11:02

Argh! Ah well. Thanks @CheshireChat.

I really wouldn't worry too much, I had the exact same problem when I went to have mine removed. The nurse couldn't find my strings to remove it so sent me to the hospital, it took the doctor about 30 seconds to find it and remove it.

ItsInThereSomewhere · 26/04/2019 11:13

Thanks for the reply. She did say that they weren't allowed to go looking for it if it wasn't apparent. Hopefully it will be an easy job.
(Also does anyone know how I can get this thread deleted or change my user name fail?)

My Mirena strings disappeared a couple of years ago. I had an ultrasound and found it was still correctly in place so let it be.
I had it taken out recently and had to have another ultrasound to locate it and go to a special clinic to get it removed (GP couldn't get it out).

tiutinkerbell · 26/04/2019 13:46

I had mine fitted last week and have no idea where the strings are or what I should be checking as the doctor never showed me! I am hoping all is OK! Hope everything works out for you!

ItsInThereSomewhere · 26/04/2019 14:38

@tiutinkerbell this is my second one and the first came out with no issues.
My husband could feel the strong with his fingers at first and now says it's only in certain positions he can feel it (not with his fingers Blush)
It wouldn't put me off having one again.

I had one fall out in the toilet a few years ago, luckily I saw it otherwise I might not have realised.

ItsInThereSomewhere · 26/04/2019 19:15

@edenhills I get pregnant super quick. I think if it had fallen out I'd know about it! Did it not hurt coming out?

Update for you all!
I went yesterday to see the specialist doctor who sees everyone in the area who has coil issues.
Seems that it was probably put in a little too soon after I had my last baby and because I haven't had a period in five years it had got a little bit too comfortable.
She said she would go on for as long as I could cope with.
Lots of deep breathing and squeezing my partners hand and a fair amount of pain and it was out. It was embedded. I spent the rest of the day on the couch as suggested (four hours but then I had stuff to do!)
I'm ok today. Still a bit of bleeding but nothing major. And despite it all I would have a coil again if I needed it.

Corrrr OP I was about to chime in with something reassuring (had my legs tightly crossed) but you’re a bloody hero! So glad it’a sorted.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 31/05/2019 22:13

My strings have disappeared too. I should have had it removed September 2017, but found the experience so painful in 2012 that I'd been putting it off until last Summer. This just makes me even more stressed so I'm burying my head in the sand and pretending its not there. Does anyone know if there's a danger to leaving the bloody thing up there forever?

OkOkWhatsNext · 31/05/2019 22:44

Glad you found it. Mine disappeared. Didn’t show up on scan. I requested an x-ray, despite GP saying it must have fallen out without me noticing Hmm. It had perforated my uterus and was floating around in my abdominal cavity. Keyhole surgery required to remove it. Did NOT have another one after that. Did have another baby though...
