AIBU about emmerdale menopause storyline?

Ok so I know AIBU for watching emmerdale but Rona's menopause dramatics are giving me serious rage. She's coming over as some completely demented, bullying, unreasonable, hysterical loon. (For non watchers, she was in an accident and ended up getting hysterectomy and presumably ovaries out). The other night she described herself as something like an old hag - can't remember exactly - and it's all about how shit her life is now, she's old and wizened etc. The boyfriend is being soooooo understanding but getting to the end of his rope now.

I get that some women have very unpleasant symptoms and it can be a distressing time.....I went early at 42 and had very little symptoms and not having periods any more was great.

So AIBU in fast forwarding her every time she pops up on screen? (And I know it's a soap, drama, I can turn off etc).

Emerdale is a soap it is meant to be dramatic and ott what was the character like befors ? althoughi can see having a car accident leading to a full hystsrectomy forcing menopause might be traumatising ! I wassn't having the best time before I went on hrt it was horrible as it might be for other women

@Mrsjayy....agreed- she's an okay character. Has had a very turbulent life etc....I'm usually good at zoning out and not letting the dramatics bother me- indeed I only watch so I don't need to engage my brain after a,hard day at the office.....but there is just something about the everyday sexism in this story that irks.

She’s also struggling because she won’t take pain killers because of previous addiction issues. Don’t underestimate the volatility of someone in pain.

I've not seen it and don't know the character as haven't watched emmerdale in years but a surgical menopause is bloody awful I've had one myself (early 30s because of cancer).
There's no body slowing down all those hormones - it's sharp, sudden and nasty!

Hopefully they'll turn the story line round into what's helpful and what help women can get in this situation.

Mrsjayy · 26/04/2019 09:46

I am more of an Eastenders women GrinI only see Emmerdale at my mums so i don't know what is going is it her going on about being an old woman thats getting you because yes that is sexist and irritating but I think covering a tough menopause is a good thing too

Mrsjayy · 26/04/2019 09:48

My friend had a hysterectomy at 32 and she said the menopause just comes and punches you in the face

That's what I thought. There is a difference between a natural menopause and one brought on suddenly by a hysterectomy.

I'm 43 and perimenopausal - my dh says I'm quite scary at times.. I'm finding it difficult and thats just doing it natures way, so I assume having it forced upon you could be extremely disturbing for some..

I worked with women in my professional life who had abrupt surgical menopause for cancer or cancer prevention and agree it can be devastating and lots of crap symptoms. But I think what annoys me so much is they are totally portraying her as a jealous loon who is being completely unreasonable due to "menopause" ....it's the focus on her unreasonable behaviour / poor partner with no empathy. I hope they do turn it around and show at least some positives.

@Mrsjayy.....she wouldn't be out of place in Easties now she's a ranting loon! Grin

^^ this.

I have RA. When I was really bad with the pain i was very unreasonable when suffering with PMS. Pain makes you 10x angrier when it’s severe enough.
I agree though, the storyline is annoying!
