To put a bath in my en suite?

We are due to update both the main family bathroom at home and the one in our ensuite. Think dated, crumbling tiles, knackered showers etc.

Main family bathroom has a bath with shower over it, plus loo and sink. En suite (mainly used by me) has a standalone shower plus loo and sink. Husband has queried getting rid of the bath from the main bathroom so we can put a proper standalone shower in there, which would be better day to day than the over bath one. This got me thinking about removing the standalone shower from the en suite and replacing it with a bath. So we would have shower in main family bathroom and bath in ensuite.

Has anyone done this or can anyone give any suggestions about whether this would be fabulous (I'm thinking lovely baths in my en suite that is rarely used by anyone else) or a bad idea? We have one 9 year old DC who still has baths but is starting to grow out of them and I think soon will mainly be having showers. Day to day DH and I mainly have showers but I love the odd therapuetic soak and would hate to get rid of the bath completely.

Thank you all in advance!

Would you put a shower over the bath? A second shower would be handy.

As long as you have room go for it. A bath is a must for me after two houses without (rentals) and I miss it badly even though I don’t use it frequently for myself.

ValleyoftheHorses · 25/04/2019 18:49

We have done it the other way round: en-suite has a big walk in shower, house bathroom has a lovely big bath (currently enjoying that with a glass of Wine )
We both shower in the morning and I sometimes have a soak at night/ weekends. So that set up works.
Our spare bedroom has a shower also, which DS can use when older and for guests.
It works for us and I think it would be saleable as long as the house has both shower and bath.

pringlechairs · 25/04/2019 18:50

Thank you both. The issue with putting the shower in the ensuite and bath in the main bathroom is that as our DC gets older, I don't really want them going through our bedroom to have showers. I guess we could also put a shower over the bath in the ensuite but in practice we rarely use two showers at the same time.

Do it! I love our en suite bath, it's only used by me and the 'vibe' is much calmer than in the cluttered family bathroom.

pringlechairs · 25/04/2019 18:55

OOh that's good to hear Two2tango. Did you put the bath in there or was it designed that way originally? The ensuite is mainly mine so I'm loving the idea of a Mum-only bath vibe!

We have both in ours. Both get regular use.
I think it depends on if you are a bath person.

Pythonesque · 25/04/2019 18:55

Think carefully about how long you are likely to stay in this house - if there is a "risk" of moving in a few years, would not having a bath in the "family" bathroom be a possible negative to buyers?

We're in a similar situation, need to redo bathroom and ensuite (showers so knackered we're all using the bath at the moment). I've wondered about a bath in our ensuite too although I think we're likely to keep things as they are. Main difference is that our main bathroom does have a separate shower rather than over the bath. Is it definite that you can't get bath + shower in the main bathroom?

pringlechairs · 25/04/2019 18:59

The main bathroom is quite small so there is no way we could get a bath and shower in there. It's shower over bath or one or the other. The shower over bath is ok but not ideal for being used several times in one day. It hadn't occurred to me that the lack of bath in main bathroom could put potential buyers off but I guess for buyers with younger kids it might do. Which is something to think about. We have no immediate plans to sell at all and could be there for years but you never know.

We’re looking at properties to buy at the moment and have spotted one with a bath in the en suite which is a definite selling point, but I’d want one in the family bathroom too, as well as two showers, but then we’ll have 3 teenagers in the next few years so have different needs.

pringlechairs · 25/04/2019 19:01

All really helpful points. Now I'm thinking maybe we should have a bath and shower in both... So I can still have my Mum bath Smile

Put a bath with shower over in both. Cubicles leak like fuck

pringlechairs · 25/04/2019 20:07

Good point monkeysox that is one reason we are replacing the one in the ensuite. It is a hideous leaking enclosure that does not function on any level. DH has in mind some sort of great enclosure but that will probably only work if we turn it into a wet room.

We have bath with shower over in both the main bathroom and en-suite and it works very well .

EsteeLouder · 25/04/2019 20:17

We have 2 en-suites, one with a large shower. This was part of the original build.
We extended and built another (master) en suite and put a large shower in there too.
6 years later, we ripped the whole thing out and put in a L shaped bath and shower. It's got a shower with 2 fixed and mobile heads where you'd normally stand to shower and an additional shower on the central bath taps (so I can wash my hair when in the bath).
It's also an air spa jacuzzi.

All bases covered with this option.

maloofhoof · 25/04/2019 20:26

I have an en suite with a bath only and the main bathroom has a shower cubicle only. Previous owner did it as main bathroom had no room for both and I hate it. It worries me if we ever sell that it'll be a major negative as I'd never buy with this set up myself (partner bought it before we met) as it's just a pain. As a family of four who all mainly prefer baths, it's really inconvenient. If there was room I'd do shower over bath in both.

pallisers · 25/04/2019 20:31

Given that you want a bath in your ensuite, I'd do a shower over bath in both rather than putting a shower in the family bathroom - purely for resale. We aren't going anywhere in our house but I left the bath in our family bathroom (hasn't been used in years and won't be) for that reason. A walk-in shower is lovely but not essential.

pringlechairs · 25/04/2019 21:26

Thank you all. I am now erring towards a bath with shower over in both, will need to have a think about measurements and layout to see what would work best in both.

We have a bath in the ensuite and it's used most days. It does have a hand held shower option too.

The main bathroom is bath only with bidet , but there is a separate shower room too.

MereDintofPandiculation · 25/04/2019 21:38

am now erring towards a bath with shower over in both, That's a good idea. Use of a bathroom isn't just about the facilities, it's about the ambience, and about all your personal stuff. Our family bathroom has all DSs toiletries in, whereas our en-suite has just our stuff, and I know I can leave the door unlocked without being gate-crashed by DS.

CaurnieBred · 25/04/2019 21:40

We have L-shape bath with shower in ensuite and shower in family bathroom. DH and I use the ensuite and DD and guests use the family bathroom. The one in the ensuite comes from the mains and the one in the family bathroom is electric: this way if we have boiler issues we still have access to a hot shower/water.

Works well for us. Most people don't have baths these days, but we have one if the urge strikes (don't think DH has had a bath in the 5 years we have had the ensuite).

Mum2jenny · 25/04/2019 21:43

My dh has a bath most days, it's not really my preference but it's his choice.

Autumnchill · 25/04/2019 21:50

We turned box bedroom into a shower room and the bath is in the en-suite as I love a soak 😊
