AIBU to ask for your homemade / expensive beauty disasters?

AIBUPODCAST · 24/04/2019 21:57

Hello, the team at AIBU Podcast have been talking about ridiculous beauty treatments they've paid through the nose for at a salon: Lucy ended-up with frizzy eye lashes after getting them permed - making them curl downwards over her eyes (it cost her £40), the whole team have paid good money for various 'toning' treatments - which didn't work.
AND we also want to know about those home treatments which had disastrous consequences. Examples so far include: Honey based face-masks, which got stuck in hair, carrot face-masks turning skin orange and body scrubs made with peppermint oil - causing white heat over recently shaved legs.
We might well talk about this on the podcast and include your responses (all in the name of schadenfreude).

@Eliza9919 thankyou ! I have been but I didn't realise I had so many hair follicles on my legs and it leaves them with a scab at every one 😂😂 looks lovely

Eliza9919 · 26/04/2019 13:52

@butterflykiss00 Lol. I think you can also use sugar to exfoliate with.

AIBUPODCAST · 26/04/2019 14:58

Producer Amanda also had one of these - it was called 'Silky Mitt' !!

The silky mitt is in response to the post from Rowan's exfoliator pads.

Seems like there was a lot of eggy hair back in the day!!!!

I remember reading as a teenager that mayonnaise made a great hair conditioner. I had really long thick hair at the time and washing it out was grim! Not one to be repeated. When I was about 20 I read some celeb or other say in a magazine that they used lavender oil on spots as well. So, one evening i mixed some in with moisturiser before going to bed, but must have used too much, as next morning I woke up to a bright red sore face. I'd basically given myself a homemade chemical peel - ouch!

Home bikini wax with cold strips - I ripped inner labia away from outer labia and ended up in A&E. Not serious but a LOT of blood vessels in that area!

Knittedfairies · 26/04/2019 17:37

Maybe my sister had a 'Jackie' annual for Christmas too!

TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront · 26/04/2019 20:54

Good god some of these have made me heave!

Mine was having £320 worth of 18 inch hair extensions which looked absolutely amazing but weighed a bloody tonne which made my head sore! They also took forever to wash, dry and keep knot free. Paid another £80 to have them removed 2 weeks later!

This was about 2 years ago and it still pains me!!

Helpmepleasenow48 · 26/04/2019 21:04

Many
Henna then Sun In which made my hair green.
Left Veet on too long the first time I used it - I was 16. My stepfather had to take me to the doctor...
Last year used a SAN Tropez self tan face mask left on too long and looked like I had dipped my face in gravy!
Charcoal face mask from Dermalogica - left on too long and ended up looking beetroot red (I have since used it properly and it does work if left on for the right amount of time).
Used a hair colour remover thinking it was the version that removed dye - it was the kind that also strips your hair colour so I ended up with orange hair not light brown hair.

Some of these are hilarious..... a much needed laugh after a truly dreadful day

Smokeahontas · 26/04/2019 21:11

My electric shaver died and in my rush to buy a new one, I didn’t realise it was actually an epilator. The scream when I realised would have broken glass. How anyone can stick that is beyond me.

Myworstnightmare123 · 26/04/2019 21:13

I had very expensive hair extensions done. Came home swishing my new hair. Cat jumped up as I lent down and got caught by his claws in hair extensions. Que lots of screaming as I was running around kitchen with cat hanging out of my hair. DP grabbed cat and pulled him out of hair along with number of extensions still caught in his claws that had been ripped out at the scalp leaving me with a number of bald circles around my hair line.

I am ROARING

Redcrayons · 26/04/2019 21:20

I had one of those sandpaper hair removal thingies. Made absolutely no difference whatsoever, though I suppose I was quite well exfoliated.
Scalded myself on my face with hot wax, lovely scab for ages
Many self tan disasters, including 'fixing' streaky legs by slathering more tan on it. go big or go home eh?

BitOfFun · 26/04/2019 21:21

I am WINCING!

BitOfFun · 26/04/2019 21:23

Also a one-time user of the silky Hmm mitts. My skin looked like I'd attacked it with a belt-sander.

goose1964 · 26/04/2019 21:33

My worst was hennaing my hair, I'm naturally a dark blonde with reddish tones. I went brick red. Being henna all I could do was wait for it to grow out 9

SRK16 · 26/04/2019 21:46

As a teen I used a fake tanner for my face; it looked great except I got a dark patch in the crease by my mouth. Was due to see a boy a liked and was desperate to get rid... thought exfoliating would work... used a pumice stone 😫 had a huge scab that looked like a massive cold sore and it didn’t go away for weeks. I did not get with the boy. I blame the scab.
