47 verrucas!!!!

Sunlight82 · 24/04/2019 15:19

I caught by first verruca 8 years ago when I was very ill whilst pregnant. Since then they have slowly spread over both feet. I saw a chiropodist for 5 year until she basically gave up with them, then I saw a private podiatrist who told me I had 47 and gave me the swift treatment on 4 of the biggest ones which basically microwaves them and was more painful than childbirth). It didn’t work. He told me I needed to be referred to a dermatologist as medication for it was the only thing left. I saw my GP months ago who said they can’t refer for verrucas and sent me to the surgery podiatrist. I’ve just been for that appointment, was in 2 minutes for him to tell me there’s nothing they can do.

I can’t carry on like this! I’m in agony all of the time. They throb 24 hours a day, it’s painful to walk, I can’t exercise or walk any distance. I’ve passed them to everyone in my family despite me being so careful to keep them covered at all times.

What on Earth do I do now? They’ve told me I need to go private but we can’t afford it. I am absolutely desperate Sad

How is your general health? Do you eat plenty of fruit and veg, not too much sugar/ alcohol?

MindYourLanguage · 24/04/2019 15:40

We had two bad cases, one on each child at different times. We went on holiday to a place that had a saltwater pool and both cases cleared up over the course of 2 weeks. I was told that they are caused by a virus and won't go away properly until the virus does - I suppose when you are healthy enough to fight it off - so the rest of the holiday might have helped encourage the salt water treatment!

alwaysthepessimist · 24/04/2019 15:41

the only thing that has ever worked on my daughters is salactol out on every night and the following night rub the top with an emery board - despite all the chiropy appts etc this was the only that worked a treat

BunnyBob · 24/04/2019 15:42

You need to go back to your GP and demand that they refer you to a specialist!

Shamoo · 24/04/2019 15:43

I had warts and verucas on my hand (about 20) it was beyond horrible. Used to try and cut them off and dig them out but grew back bigger. Had them frozen off in the end: paid for one private consultation with Bupa at which they did me a referral back to the nhs and the rest was done for free. Took about 4 sessions and they were all gone, never came back. Thank god.

47 verrucas that don't respond to treatment indicates something serious is going on on a deeper level. Home remedies aren't the solution.

BarkandCheese · 24/04/2019 15:45

The problem with verrucas is they sit in your skin layers so your immune system doesn’t see them. A few years ago I was in your position, I don’t know how many I had but I had two large mosaic clusters which would have made it impossible to count.

They spread to my fingers and I’d had enough. I used some caustic paste to burn the ones off my fingers, I really don’t recommend anyone trying this, I had open, infected holes on my hands after. I went on holiday just as my hands were mostly healed, by the time I got home my verrucas were disappearing. They didn’t turn black and fall off like everyone on line described they would, they just turned back in regular foot skin gradually.

I’m pretty sure what happened was the virus finally got recognised by my immune system via my damaged fingers, and killed it off. Since then I’ve read about a treatment called needling which is a kind of hygiene version of what I (accidentally) did.

MissBridgetJones · 24/04/2019 15:48

See another GP. They absolutely can refer you due to your case being so severe and impeding your ability to walk.

Second opinion time - good luck.

For a bit of comfort- I ended up with them severely affecting one foot (very stressful time - lost mum to cancer at 16). Tried everything. Nothing made them budge, excruciating treatments.... one day they just went. Could be an underlying run-down issue? X

CaveDrawer · 24/04/2019 15:49

I also remember the Embarrassing Bodies episode with the child with veruccas. Go see the GP. They need to try find out why you are getting so many.

MatildaTheCat · 24/04/2019 15:51

I had lots as a teenager and well remember that awful throbbing. They did eventually go and have never returned. I think I picked the biggest ones out when they got to the point of being ‘ready’.

You should definitely push for treatment as it’s causing such pain. Hardly a cosmetic problem.

Here the Nice guidelines say to consider referral if the verrucas are painful.

Good luck.

CoffeeWithMyOxygen · 24/04/2019 15:51

This stuff was the only thing that worked for me, I got it on prescription; www.chemist-4-u.com/occlusal-cutaneous-wart-solution-10ml

None of the home remedies worked and a private podiatrist treatment didn't either, but this stuff was great - it basically killed the skin on both the soles of my feet, I'd sit there peeling off huge chunks of it every night but after a few weeks of constant use I finally reached pink perfect skin with no verrucas! That was about 2 years ago and they've not come back since. I didn't even find it painful though they warned that some people do, it depends how many layers you end up melting off I suppose. DH still comments now and then on what a difference it's made, he'd never seen my feet without verrucas before.

I'd also strongly suggest going to see a different GP though, you've been majorly fobbed off. I felt a bit daft going in with something as 'mundane' as verrucas but the minute I showed the nurse she looked shocked at the extent of them and immediately started looking up what she could do.

TheMightyToosh · 24/04/2019 15:52

I had a massive cluster that was there for a year or more. Suddenly went away completely when I started using original source mint shower gel. No idea if it was the reason, but worth a try!

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/04/2019 15:52

I’m a podiatrist, nothing you can do about them. You have to wait till the immune system is strong enough to locate them.

A colleague of mine had them on hands and feet until the day after her divorce was finalised, work up next morning with none.

I refuse to treat them now.

Lovemusic33 · 24/04/2019 15:53

I had a load of warts on my hands one after using steroid creams for a long period, I ended up having them frozen, had to have them done every week for 4 weeks and it was pretty painful but it worked. I’m now trying to battle with my verruca which I have had for years and I’m not sure I could handle having it frozen as my feet are so sensitive.

BollocksToBrexit · 24/04/2019 15:53

I had this years ago. My GP couldn't treat them as there were too many. The sole of one foot was almost completely covered. I was referred to a specialist at the hospital, sorry I can't remember their job title. He prescribed salicylic acid which I had to paint on them twice a day until they were gone. It took a couple of months before they were gone completely, but they did eventually go.

See if your GP can prescribe it. If not, get them to refer you to someone who can.

missmarplesapprentice · 24/04/2019 15:54

Hi OP. Home remedies are not going to work and the stretched NHS are just passing you from one person to the next.
I had the EXACT same thing (well, similar sounding) and had 33 veruccas on my feet as a teenager. Started off by seeing chiropodist then the GP who tried liquid nitrogen on them. As some of them were so close he ended up burning more of my good skin rather than the warts/veruccas. I hate to tell you but private treatment was the only way I got this sorted.
Thankfully I was included on one of my parents health cashback schemes at work. I was referred to a consultant dermatologist who then tried laser treatment......not for me. (Soo painful).
After many months of pain, he eventually offered me an ointment/cream. They didn't like to prescribe it (maximum time limit I could use it, something about the immune system) but is painlessly cleared them all away.
There is options it is just knowing them and fighting to get to them. I really hope you get this sorted OP. Sending you my best wishes

eosmum · 24/04/2019 15:55

There was a case on a tv medical show, could have been embarrassing bodies, about someone who had that many it turned out there was a serious underlying issue. I can’t remember what. I’ll try to search.

mogonfoxnight · 24/04/2019 15:58

my ds got an infected one (or had a splinter in it or something) which had to be removed by surgery which was pretty horrific, so when he then got 2 more i used cider vinegar, soaking cotton wool and then taping on with a strong plaster, not duct tape, and both went - we were on a beach at the time and sometimes the plaster fell off during the day and i think the sand and sea helped a lot.

Hope it gets sorted soon, sounds really awful Flowers

eosmum · 24/04/2019 15:58

archive.org/details/youtube-V6zhmfumXAc If you google charlottes story, embarrassing bodies, you should find it.

girlwithadragontattoo · 24/04/2019 16:00

Have you tried sun beds at all? A s stupid as that sounds when i was a kid i had a cluster on the sole of my foot and that was the only thing that worked on it

gingerscot · 24/04/2019 16:02

I had this in my 20s. Both feet covered for years. In the end, after all conventional treatments had failed, I sterilised a pair of nail scissors, found the biggest (which happened to have been the original) and dug it out.

I got the scissors round the head and jiggled/loosened it (agony!) then slowwwwly pulled it out. The “tail” (root?) was huge. I’m not gonna lie, it was excruciating. And it bled like nothing else. Started gearing myself to do another one, but within a week or two they had all disappeared on their own. I suspect my hacking triggered my immune system to “realise” they were there and sort them out.

Not necessarily recommending it, I was at the end of my tether with them, but it did work for me.

Teanocoffeethanks · 24/04/2019 16:03

A proper chiropodist sorted mine. After 3 sessions a few weeks apart they had all gone. She took the dead skin off until they started to blees, applied a freeze spray thing and some burning paste. Even the wart on my hand went. I don't know why a podiatrist would refuse to treat them as someone mentioned further up. She said she had to irritate them to get the body to react and recognise.

BrazenHusky74 · 24/04/2019 16:04

Thuja tablets worked for my DS when nothing else touched the problem.

notatwork · 24/04/2019 16:07

It sounds like giving your immune system a boost won't hurt OP. Lots of fruit and veg, lots of sunlight, maybe a multivitamin, light exercise, lots of sleep.

They spread through damp skin so keep your skin as dry as possible apart from washing and treatments.

Have you use footner? I didn't have as many as you but a couple fell away a few days after using a footner exfoliation.

MrBrown · 24/04/2019 16:07

Was literally just reading through the comments to see anyone had suggested it but BrazenHusky beat me to it by 2 minutes Grin

Thuja homeopathic tablets cleared up all my warts as a kid when nothing else worked. You can get them in Boots.
