Baby Eczema - Suncream

Posting for traffic. We have a 7 month old whose eczema is controlled by Lush Dream Cream and occasionally hydrocortisone for the worse bits.

As it's getting sunnier, I'm wondering if I should be getting him some sun cream. I doubt he'll be exposed too direct rays too much but he's fair and feel like he should be wearing SPF just in case - do you think this is necessary? If so what would you recommend for eczema prone skin? I'm hesitant to use anything different as most of the eczema creams you can get on prescription seem to make his skin worse.

My 2 year old uses Nivea baby but has never had any issues with dry or sensitive skin, and has different skin that is much less likely to burn even if exposed without protection, so I'm a novice here!

I wouldn't use sun cream, I'd keep a baby that young out of the sun.

Hi OP - I have two very fair skinned DC, also prone to eczema, and found it was a bit of trial and error - a bit like washing powders. We found that supermarket own brand washing powder/liquid (non bio) worked well for their clothes as they were allergic to some brands. We also found that the same supermarket's suncream was a winner, but the Boots one gave them problems. I would suggest doing a little patch test with the Nivea you already use for your older DC, and take it from there. Good luck!

Thanks both!

Dame - I do plan to keep him out of the sun, but he is crawling already and when we were at the beach at the weekend he kept escaping from his little tent shade and was exposed for a few seconds at a time. It's ok to keep him covered and shaded at the minute but I figure as he gets more mobile it will get more and more difficult to keep him shaded 100% if the time!

Have you heard or tried childs farm? I swear by the moisturiser for my partner's eczema and my dry skin. Now use it on 11 week old just for massaging and had no reaction. To my point they've started doing a sun cream now so may be worth a go!

Mumluv2 · 24/04/2019 08:59

I can vouch for the child farm factor 50. 3 year old with really bad excema and after our mini heatwave in Ireland her skin didn't swell up or crack using the childfarm factor 50 Smile

Mumluv2 · 24/04/2019 09:02

I know boots in Ireland are doing a special offer on it at the moment...... So I have seriously stocked up. It'll probably snow now Grin

Another vote for child’s farm. Have a look on their website, there is currently 20% off sun cream.

daisygoodwillflett · 24/04/2019 10:32

Daughter has very bad eczema which we treat daily. We've had good luck with green people sunscreen. I don't buy the child's version, it is more expensive and more or less the same.

jaseyraex · 24/04/2019 10:49

Another vote for child's farm. We did some patch tests with a few suncreams and the child's farm was the only one with no reaction. It's quite pricey but seems to be worth it.

Siameasy · 24/04/2019 10:59

I use Green People too as normal sunscreens make me sneeze. Found it excellent. I wouldn’t bother with sun cream for normal day to day life yet as it’s not that hot or if he’s just popping in and out of his tent - some sun exposure is healthy.

RainbowMum11 · 24/04/2019 11:03

The only sun cream I have found that doesn't give DD a rash is Sun Sense - it's Australian and not cheap but absolutely every other one we've tried since she was a baby brings her out in a rash.

OddSockMonkey · 24/04/2019 17:28

My mum swore by ultra sun when I was younger, lots of little ones in our family have had quite severe childhood eczema and used the same and she used it on me in Spain when I was 3-4 and had come down with a bad case of invitigo too and did no harm, used to only be able to get it on the plane or duty free but think it is online lots of places now, all little ones she knows with sensitive skin still use it now

rosydreams · 24/04/2019 17:31

Sun Sense is good

UserFriendly14 · 24/04/2019 17:49

Tropic Skincare- all natural ingredients.

coffeeforone · 24/04/2019 19:35

Thanks for the tips everyone! Have added child's farm SPF50 to my next shop and see how he is with that then will try the other suggestions!

I'd say just keep out of sun. For the beach either go really early or really late so it doesn't matter, no sun at all 11-3 for neither baby nor 2 year old. It's tough at that age but you have to in the height of summer.

Wasywasydoodah · 24/04/2019 19:59

My DS had eczema and we found Ultrasun and Sunsense both good, though Ultrasun much more easily absorbed which was important for us due to some sensory issues. I’ve never tried Child’s farm. I’d avoid using where possible and use long loose clothing on a toddler. But sometimes you just need cream on them when they get mobile and pull their hats off!
