I have a 5 year old with sen hes awaiting panel for autism.
We had parents evening 6 weeks ago. Teacher told me that he wasn't doing so great in communication. Hes in nappies and won't tell them when he needs changing. That hes finally made a little progress in phonics. His writing needed to be way bettwr much neater and cursive. I said hes good with numbers she said well erm hes ok i suppose. She had nothing positive to say at all. His SALT also went to do a visit. Noted down his litreal understanding of things. His miss understanding of things. The fact he didnt play with children but did with adults. That his speech is still imature at times with a slight american accent as well.
Today i had a meeting with the senco. To be told hes now at age related expectations for everything. That he has lots of friends plays with everyone. Understands everything and hes no longer struggle. He still has his social and emotional intervention groups and they are also adding him into some understanding interventions.
I really don't get how all this can suddenly change from before half term. He hates school and crys about how hard he finds it and how much he struggles.
The only thing i can think off that maybe changed things was the last 3 weeks we did a stay and play session every thursday afternoon which school said he thrieved having me in school. Its such a minefield trying to figure it all out.

Hmmm that’s a pretty big difference between the meetings! I wonder whether the stay and play sessions have been so successful that the senco really wanted to big up how much better he’s been since those. Are they continuing? Sounds as though he’s thrived through having them.

I would arrange another meeting with the class teacher and senco together. Maybe in a month’s time so there is a focused period of observing him and having more detailed feedback. And remember for certain standardised assessments he may well be performing at age related expectations, which is great, it doesn’t mean that he can’t have a diagnosis. Many children with ASD are working within age related expectations in certain areas

Unfortunately not it was only for 3 weeks unfortunately.

Yes i know they can has asd and have related expectiations i have a 14 year old with asd whos actually doing way above average.

I am just so confused that he went though 2 nurseries being 2 to 2 1/2 years behind age related that the teacher seemed fustrated 6 weeks ago to now being told that hes now where he should be. I also got told hos health and personal care had even moved up when i was told that wouldn't change till hes toilet trained. I am not trying to be horrible to him i just want to make sure hes being supported right and getting the help he needs.

That does sound confusing then. I think a joint meeting is needed. It might help to set out clearly before hand exactly what you want from the meeting, ie a clear breakdown of areas where he’s doing ok, and areas where he’s behind, so that you can support him.
