To ask how to find a maths tutor for DD aged 12..literally no idea where to start

DD 12 is quite bright but bored in year 7 maths and getting disengaged. It seems that the teacher is a bit depressed or disillusioned, even his collgues admit he is "old school" and he seems to just put things on the board or direct them to My Maths website and not really do much explaining or interacting.
I am after someone who can check that she is actually absorbing and understanding the information and make it interesting and relevant for her. We have never had tutors so I have no idea how to find one. Can anyone advise please?
Happy to have this resited if there is a better board...

Can you approach the Head of Maths at dd’s school?
Is there a parent Facebook group for the school or your town?

Try sending a job ad to your local university careers dept amd get a young woman from the Maths dept to come and be enthusiastic about it with her

If you don't mind having someone who isn't a qualified teacher, you might consider an enthusiastic Y12.

DS2 and his friends volunteer at school supporting KS3 pupils in Maths lessons and some of them also tutor younger students in Maths. They charge £10 per hour.

Do you know any teachers? Ask them if they know/work with maths teachers.
Google “maths tutors insert area
Ask on local fb groups - this is the most common way to find tutors around here.
Contact your nearest PGCE providers and see if they have any student Maths teachers who would be interested.

DH tutors and these are the usual ways. He never advertises for pupils they just ask him usually through friends of friends.

Agree with asking Head of Maths - there may be other teachers in the school who also tutor and who would know the current curriculum well - we did this for my DS.

Thank you all, really sensible suggestions

I tutor, am also a teacher, I get most of my tutoring via FB recommendations, me offering when someone asks for a tutor if I can fit them in.

Most schools will have a list of people who offer tutoring so speak to Head of Department. Both schools I have worked in have not allowed you to tutor students at your own school, but other teachers in other schools will be able to help.

Agree with others an enthusiastic Yr 12 or Uni student if you are close to one.

Use TutorHunt or TutorFirst

SlummyMummy77 · 23/04/2019 22:46

Kumon?

Threeminis · 23/04/2019 23:44

We found ds' tutor by asking one of his school teachers who put us in touch with her.
Otherwise I would try your local Facebook page. Good luck, ds' tutor has made an incredible difference!

Tunnocks34 · 23/04/2019 23:47

I’m a maths tutor, I use tutor hunt, I also advertise on local Facebook groups.

angereverywhere · 23/04/2019 23:52

Tutor hunt is great and best prices for both parties so keeps rates down.
Never go near Kumon, I work in education consulting and their statistics are appalling!
