To ignore the head and send DS in summer uniform?

SummerStresses · 23/04/2019 16:01

Ever since my kids were small the schools summer uniform has been summer dresses for the girls. Shorts and school regulation polo for the boys.

DD has just told me it's changed and now boys in KS3 have to wear a shirt and tie all year round.

Girls are still allowed to wear summer dresses.

How can a 7 year old be expected to sit in a shirt and tie in this roasting heat right through to July?

They sell polo's upto 12 years Hmm but you aren't allowed to wear them?

AIBU to tell her DS is wearing the polo sold by THEIR office this summer.

@wibbleee

You beat me to it!

JudgeRindersMinder · 23/04/2019 16:56

Right now I’m looking at my 6 foot 2 almost 17 year old ds who survived wearing a shirt and (proper, not clip on) tie from P1...they do survive!
Short sleeved shirts are cooler than polo shirts anyway

Floatingfancy · 23/04/2019 17:00

Well YANBU as I think all uniform is completely stupid but it is not exacting "roasting heat" is it? I think it's 22c in SE England today.

youarenotkiddingme · 23/04/2019 17:01

My son is secondary. Yr 10 now.

They wear shirt tie and blazer with trousers for winter months.

Summer term they can wear tailored school shorts and they don't have to wear their blazer.
This is from May half term til summer officially. However they will announce it earlier if weather is continuously hot and extend it until October half term likewise if weather is such.

They are expected to wear ties but last year they did tell them to remove them when in school as it was 28°+ for days on end

PregnantSea · 23/04/2019 17:03

You're really paying the price for accidentally calling yr3 KS3 lol!

If you haven't been sent an official notice of some sort then just ignore it. If they officially tell you to do this though you pretty much just have to. It's annoying but the uniform is the uniform.

Minniemagoo · 23/04/2019 17:04

DD told you?
First thing I would do is confirm what is actually allowed.

cathay123 · 23/04/2019 17:04

Our kids wear shirt and tie all year round - its easier to just have the one uniform. If it is really hot weather, they're allowed to take off their ties and undo the top button.

itstheweekend2 · 23/04/2019 17:06

I'd send him in the polo shirt if that's what you want to do. It's a petty change by the school, and only primary therefore surely not that important what they wear.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 23/04/2019 17:07

DS wore a shirt and tie from reception. Short sleeved shirt in summer which is actually cooler than a polo shirt. Y11 now and only allowed to take his blazer off with permission. I’m not sure this is a battle worth fighting OP.

Knittedfairies · 23/04/2019 17:09

Send him in a polo shirt until you get confirmation of the change from the school.

OneDayillSleep · 23/04/2019 17:10

Only nursery and infants (to Y2) wear polos and Y3 and up it’s shirt and tie all year round. Girls can wear dresses and boys shorts in any class though.

Oh and my husband is a teacher who wears a shirt and tie all year long, like we did at school too! A short sleeved shirt is much cooler than a polo shirt anyway.

MrsJBaptiste · 23/04/2019 17:16

Wait until they're at High School and have to wear a blazer all day long, even when they're walking home from school. Granted we don't get that many red hot days here in the UK but seeing kids walking home in a blazer when everyone else is in shorts and t-shirts is rubbish.

57MtPleasantStreet · 23/04/2019 17:18

I think polo shirts are much more comfortable for primary aged kids, who cares really how smart they look at 7 years old?!! Ties at primary are ridiculous imo too.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 23/04/2019 17:21

Our local primary is shirt and tie from reception, sorry sleeves showed in summer, sorts are cooler than polos and do look much smarter. I'm assuming they've made it one uniform all year to save people having to buy two sets of uniform. If you don't like it there will be other schools with your preferred dress code.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 23/04/2019 17:21

*short sleeves allowed

Bythebeach · 23/04/2019 17:22

My 3 boys have managed short sleeve shirt and tie no issue but surely they can’t enforce an immediate change and there should be a letter etc!

RavenLG · 23/04/2019 17:22

I'm pretty sure the male teachers won't be wearing a short sleeved shirt and tie in July...

Why should the kids?

BINGO!

The adult teachers obviously wont be wearing the school uniform the children are wearing, but they will certainly need to adhere to the dress code set out in their contract. It's not like they can rock up to school in shorts and a vest.

TheFairyCaravan · 23/04/2019 17:23

I think it's mad that children of any age are expected to wear a shirt and tie at school in the Summer months. My kids had to in Secondary school, and a black blazer, while the vast majority of their male teachers were in open necked short sleeved shirts. It can't be conducive to learning.

YANBU OP.

m0therofdragons · 23/04/2019 17:26

I have 3dds but boys at their school wear short sleeved shirts and ties all year from reception to year 6. Girls can wear the same or a gingham dress. Not really sure what the issue is. On the two days a year that it's exceptionally hot the teachers make a call and they can take off their ties/wear pe kit.

As a side point, I have no idea why any dc wear ties anymore. Nobody in our senior management team wears ties where I work and if a woman turned up wearing a tie it would be a statement, yet at school dc wear ties. I don't get it. Not worth some weird hissy fit over it though.

WelshMoth · 23/04/2019 17:27

Wait until you get official
Notice from the school.

Alexkate2468 · 23/04/2019 17:27

You can’t just go against rules just because you don’t like them. What kind of example does that set your children? Obviously there are situations where rules should be challenged but this isn’t one of them. A short sleeved shirt is comfortable enough. My school have shirt and tie all year round (including male staff) for all children from Year 3 onwards. Nobody has died as a consequence.
It really bugs me when parents kick up a stink about school rules. You knew there would be rules when you put your child into school. If you don’t like them, then take them out and educate them yourself.

And there are many reasons why uniform is a very good idea in schools...I don’t have time to go into it now....

Babuchak · 23/04/2019 17:27

Still can't see the issue with short-sleeved shirts, my boys wear them just as much as they wear tshirts or polos when they are home in the summer. The buttons don't exactly keep you warm Confused

Ties are fine, they don't make you over-heat either.

combatbarbie · 23/04/2019 17:27

I'd be raising it if the girls are allowed to wear summer dresses. That's unfair

Babuchak · 23/04/2019 17:28

Most men I see everyday wear a tie, it's not something that alien either

Bunnybigears · 23/04/2019 17:32

Nobody in our senior management team wears ties where I work because obviously your work is the example we should all he following. All the males in my office wear ties regardless of if they are senior or junior.
