To think this is ridiculous?

I left a bag on a train yesterday.
Rang up northern and they've located them at the station where the train terminated (2 hours away) and the only way to get it back is to travel to said station.
Crazy system ?

It is crazy but i can see its a hassle for them with all the lost luggage they must get.

PutyourtoponTrevor · 23/04/2019 15:45

What would you like to happen?

gillteed · 23/04/2019 15:46

I assumed all items would go back to the train station the service began at.

They take stuff off the train and keep it at the lost property. No reason to be transporting stuff around the country. What if it was a London to Manchester train? Would you expect stuff to go back to London?

Greeborising · 23/04/2019 15:49

Well let’s say you live in London, you visit Edinburgh and leave a bag on the train on your way home?
You’d be delighted if your bag was at KX

JellyBabied · 23/04/2019 15:51

Why would you assume that? It seems more likely that the conductor or other staff member wouldn't give it into lost property until the end of the journey, they're unlikely to break their journey to do so, so I'd expect it to be given to whichever station was the last stop.

PlainSpeakingStraightTalking · 23/04/2019 15:52

Odd. DS left his lapton on a South Eastern train out of CX - he had to go to Victoria to get it back 2 days later (train did not start from Victoria) thats where the lost property office is for South Eastern, Southern, Thameslink. Irritating but at least he got it back.

JellyBabied · 23/04/2019 15:53

Unless they have a dedicated central lost property office where everything goes.

CocoCharlie83 · 23/04/2019 15:59

Not so ridiculous, they aren't a delivery service and it isn't a situation caused by the train company it is caused by the traveller so it's up to them to retrieve their own property instead of causing additional inconvenience and costs to the train company for their mistake.

NoodlingAlong · 23/04/2019 16:02

But you could have got on the train one stop before it terminated. And the end of the line would have been better for you than the beginning in that case. It's never going to suit every passenger. But you can't expect them to transport lost property around the country to suit every customer.

Expressedways · 23/04/2019 16:14

Just be thankful they have it and someone didn’t steal it! Sorry but YABU, you’re the one that left it behind and they’re a train company not a delivery service, obviously whatever arrangement they have in place isn’t going to suit everyone. End of the line makes so much more sense than transporting all lost property back to where the train originated. Although I get, it’s annoying that you’ll have to travel 2 hours to get it back.

Poloshot · 23/04/2019 16:18

Easiest way to avoid this is to make sure you have all your belongings with you.

ScreamingValenta · 23/04/2019 16:24

DH left a rucksack on the train once. We had to travel to the destination station to collect it (fortunately not too far away).

Easy to pop in and get it, we thought - wrong. There were literally hundreds of rucksacks in the lost property room, and all kinds of other stuff. It took us about an hour to find DH's rucksack - and we knew what we were looking for! Unless the lost item is hugely distinctive, a staff member wouldn't have a hope of being able to pick it out from the tons of lost items they have.

Isitweekendyet · 23/04/2019 16:43

Could you not pay postage for it to be delivered?

Isitweekendyet · 23/04/2019 16:44

Surely they have a station office where post and packages are sent from?

gillteed · 23/04/2019 16:55

I asked if I could get Hermes to collect it but it has to be me in person.
The train ticket would be over £60 and the items in the bag not worth that.
Annoying but at least il be more careful in future
