My dad turns 70 this weekend, I have no idea what to get him, we aren't very close. However I feel I should try and get him something nais.

Trouble is he doesn't have any hobbies. All he is interested in is getting pissed, and watching films. He has no internet so anything to do with that would be wasted.

He never leaves the house as he is a bit social phobic. My Brothers are getting him whisky and a welsh guards plaque.

Suggestions please?

He was in the army and loves to chat about that stuff if thats any help!

I am hopeless at buying gifts :(

Have a look at Not On The High Street for something personalised. Or maybe the gift shop of the Imperial War Museum?

Newspaper from the date he was born?

Hip flask? You could get a sliver or pewter one and get something persona engraved on it.
Or nice whisky tumbler engraved. My DH has had both of these things for birthdays from relatives and they have gone down well

Movie boxsets of his fav genre.

Look up his regiment - you can get a lovely engraved set of glasses with thier crest on it. Equally into a bottle of something.

Or find something related to his time served, a photo and get it into a nice frame.

Or get the dates of service, service number and regiment put on a silver plaque onto a framed photo of him in uniform

Maybe?

This sounds good. I would have to find out his regiment though..

Interesting, I have searched the force records but he isn't on there. He was definitely in the army!

Could you get one of your local (independent) cinemas to play his favourite film and invite friends and family to go? Someone I know did this as a gift recently for someone older who loves films and they loved it.

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 23/04/2019 15:17

Depends when he served as I’m not sure you can search like that? If he likes telling stories about it ask him to reel off his service number - you can use that to get told of his record and ask on various regiment sites for a photo of his class / group

OP - I don't think you can search forces records for the more recent times. Records for those serving in WW1 are available but I don't think they are for WW2 and later.

Do any of your family know what regiment your DF was in?
